A reminder that these creatures are actually out there and no matter what you believe,

Sometimes they should get not only prescriptive rights to be there but the full right of way!

9 feet, 1 inch - 97 lbs.
DEEP-FRIED RATTLESNAKE

1 medium-sized rattlesnake (3-4 lbs.), cut into steaks
1/2 cup flour
1/4 cup cornmeal
1/4 cup cracker crumbs
1/2 cup milk
1 egg
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder (not garlic salt)
1 teaspoon salt
Dash pepper

Mix dry ingredients. Whisk milk into beaten egg and use to dip snake steaks.
Then coat them with dry ingredients. Fry, uncovered, in 400 degree oil until brown.
It sorta tastes like chicken. JWD

Actually, it doesn't taste like chicken. More like veal, but a bit tougher. In fact, very much like 'gator.

Yep, it's good, but not so good that I want to go chasing them down... ;)

Folks are sometimes too eager to kill a snake, and I basically like snakes... from a respectful distance, however. ::)

I work on a ranch in the foot hills east of merced and we kill a lot of rattlers in the spring and summer. I have skinned and gutted a few to eat but could not get over the stinch. Did yours smell that bad? I did kill and eat a few in the AZ desert and I dont remember them smelling as bad as these do.

If a snake has fed recently, the guts can really stink if you open up the stomach. *Unless they can find a lot of sunlight, it takes a while for their digestive juices to overcome the bacterial decay of a dead rodent.

It shouldn't affect the taste of the meat though.

I doubt that the rattler's here in the valley will get that big, however, here's a pic of of a 4 footer I snagged in my workshop a couple of summers ago and with the magic of "photo shop" it grew much bigger...like some of the fish I've caught *;D ;D.
