View Full Version : Instructions for Posting Pictures

11-06-2004, 09:43 PM
This post isn't meant for the Administrators but for the forum members who are having trouble posting pictures. Maybe a sticky would be in order here.

These boards would be a lot more interesting if members would post more pictures. It would be easier if folks could simply upload images directly to the 'Sniffer server and link to them automatically to add pictures to their posts. But since that is not the case, I'm going to try to walk members who have been having trouble posting pictures through the process.

1. The first thing you need to do is make sure that your picture is the right size. Use an image editor to re-size your digital photos to 640 pixels wide in order to fill a full column width. 320 pixels is half a column width. Resolution should be 72 dpi (dots per inch). You can set you camera to take pictures that are already 640 X 480 pixels in size. *This is usually the lowest resolution and smallest image size that your camera will take. This is all the resolution you need for web posting, but if you want to print photos, it is best to use higher resolution and reduce them for web posting with an image editor.

2. Now you have to upload your images to a free web hosting site (unless you have your own web page). *I am going to use Moment of Fame as an example (http://momentoffame.com), but you can use any host site you wish. Go to the Moment of Fame webpage and click the "register" link at the top of the page. You will be asked to fill out an on-line form that is similar to the one used to register for the 'Sniffer boards. Follow the directions and you will be sent an e-mail message with a link to follow in order to activate your account. *Now you must enter the Moment of Fame site again and this time click "login" and enter you registered username and password. Now you will see an "Upload Photos" link at the top of the page.

3. To upload photos, click the Upload Photos link. You will see a screen that has several blank fields followed by a "Browse" button. *Click the Browse button after a blank field and navigate within your own computer to find the images you want to post. Double click the image file to select it and click the Upload/Submit button at the bottom of the page. You will eventually be taken to a page where you can choose a category and add a title and comments. Choose either the Members Photo Galleries or an appropriate category such as Freshwater-->Trout. You don't have to add a title or comment if you are only going to post the image on the 'Sniffer boards. Just click "Process Files" at the bottom of the page. *Then click "Click here to return to main menu". *Congratulations, you have just loaded you image(s) onto Moment of Fame.

4. Locate you image(s) on Moment of Fame and collect their web addresses. *Click whatever category where you loaded your images and use the alphabetical index to to find your username to get to your photos.

I have loaded a picture of Mickey T's famous Bertha under the Freshwater-->trout category under my drstressor username. If you click "d", you will go to a page with my username (also our buddy donzitroller). You can click my name to get to the image for practice. If you put your mouse cursor over the image and click the right mouse button, you will see the option "properties" at the bottom of the displayed list. Click on "properties" and you will see the Address (URL): http://momentoffame.com/photopost/data/514/579Bertha-thumb.jpg

This is the web address of the thumbnail image you are viewing. *DON'T post this address. Instead, double click on the thumbnail image and view the large image. *Now right click on that large image and view the web address under properties: http://momentoffame.com/photopost/data/514/579Bertha-med.jpg

This is the address that you want to copy and paste into your post to display the picture. *I'll do that now:

To make the image appear in the post, put your mouse cursor at the beginning of the address and hold down the left mouse button and drag the mouse cursor all the way to the end of the web address. Then release the button. The entire web address should now be highlighted. To automatically add the codes that will make the image appear in the post, go to the Add YABBC toolbar above the smileys and click the "Insert Image" icon. *This is the fourth one from the left in the second row that looks like a little picture. This will add a
tag at the beginning of the web address and a
tag at the end. The address should now appear in the posting window as:

The picture will now appear in your final post like this:

Try posting some of the images found at Moment of Fame when you reply to this message. Live4trout has some nice ones. Remember, just double click on the thumbnail to view the full image. Right click the image and look under properties to get the web address. *You should be able to post any image that has a web address, which is also known as a URL (Uniform Resource Locator). I'll try to help you if you have problems.

That is great info on posting pics, but there is a much easier way. Do a google serch on image shack. They host images for free just browse to the image location on your computer open it and press the host button. Then a page will open with the proper location of your image for different applications. The correct YABB? code will already be in the URL for this board on this page. Copy the top left URL and pasted it to this board. I have had several images posted with image shack for months now and they all still work. Just make sure those pics are the proper size so the people reading your posts will not have to side scroll to see all of it.
Here is the Image Shack address: http://www.imageshack.us/

Image Shack is probably the easiest and best solution for posting pictures on the Sniffer Boards.

I'm adding this link submitted by CaptSalmon to this stickey thread:

I'm a relic from the "typewriter era" and I've finally learned the easy way to post photos to a given web site. Some people say that using the image shack site is easier. I've found that the new directions that the Moment of Fame site has just put out make the task understandable, even for an old fud like me! If you want to try it go to the following web site. I would recommend that when you upload your photos that you click on the "remember me" button, then you wont have to log in each time you use the site. Go to the following address:

The directions are easy to follow and do produce results.

With the good Doc's help I finally learned how to post pic's. Imageshack is pretty simple to use. Only thing lacking is the ability to resize before posting, but they are working on that and say they will have that feature up and running soon. Another site that Doc turned me on to was Picasa 2. [You can find it on Goggle] It has a resizing feature but I'm still on a learning curve on that site. Haven't tried CaptSalmon's site yet. Will give it a try next time I post a pic. ---fish hawk

Here is the link for downloading Picassa. It is a great free photo organizer with some useful photo editing capabilities. Use the "Export" function to re-size images.

From Pulper80:

Once a picture is up on moment of fame, you just need to get the URL. You may just want to write it down on paper, but it is much easier to let the computer do the work. Once you have the URL highlighted you can right click on the URL to bring up a little menu in which "copy" is one of the options. OR you can just hold CTRL and press C on your keyboard. Either one of these methods will copy the URL to the "clipboard". Picture this as a little man inside your computer scribbling down the URL on his clipboard for you to retrieve at a later time.

Once you have the URL copied to the clipboard (or written down on a piece of paper), then go to our board here and create a new post. Click the fourth icon/button on the 2nd row of the 2 rows of icons just above all the smiley faces. If you just hover your mouse over each icon, a short description will pop up. In this case the icon/button you want is the one that says "Insert Image". Once you click that icon/button, all it will do is put some code into the area where you usually type your messages to us. There will be a pair of brackets with the letters "img" in between them (meaning "image") and then right next to that there will be another pair of brackets with a "/img" in between them. You want to paste or type your URL right in between the two pairs of brackets. Refer to the picture below. If you wrote the URL down on a piece of paper, just type it in yourself. If the little man in your computer wrote it down (you copied it to the clipboard) you can get it back as many times as you want by right clicking the area you want to put it and selecting "paste" from the little menu OR, you can hold the CTRL button on your keyboard and press "V". Copying and pasting is an essential part of day to day efforts on the computer and I highly recommend spending a little bit of time to get it down cold. The quick and dirty directions are:
1.) Highlight what you want copied
2.) Press CTRL-C
3.) Click where you want to paste it
4.) Press CTRL-V
Remember that you can continue to paste the same thing you copied multiple times UNTIL you copy a new thing onto the clipboard. (The little man only has room for 1 item at a time).
Then just Post your message as usual, and voila! The message board sees the img flag and knows to look for a picture at the URL you provided.

I hope to post some photo's soon. Thanks for the help.

Back to my question... should I fish Verona or Discovery Park this Friday. I understand the fishing is slow, but I'm hoping the water temp will drop and the fish will head up and be here Friday. ;D

You are not resizing your picture properly. Anything over 450 pixels wide gets cut off. Use your photo editor to resize before hosting the picture.

You need to but the URL between the two image tags.

And don't include any spaces, which is what you did in you last attempt.

Any idea why I can't click on this photo and see a larger version? what am I doing wrong?

Hey Doc,
I noticed the picture above shows up larger. What has to be done so it shows up like that? thanks for the help.

11-26-2006, 07:20 PM
You're posting the thumbnail rather than the full image. At the host site, click on the thumbnail to get the larger image on your screen. Right click the large image, click properties, and copy the URL of the full sized image. That's what to post.

12-06-2006, 12:34 PM
You are trying to post a picture from your own computer. You need to first upload it to a free web hosting site before you can link to it.

12-11-2006, 10:31 AM

12-17-2006, 07:09 PM
With this method, you don't even have to register with a hosting site. *Just do this:

1. *Go to Imageshack hosting (http://imageshack.us)

2. *Hit the browse button and find the picture that you want to post on your computer.

3. *Double click on the file and it will automatically be entered on the Imageshack page. *Check "resize" 320x240 if you have not already resized your picture.

4. Click "host it"

5. *When the next page comes up, go to the very bottom and the last line will read "Direct link to image". *Copy the entire URL (starts with http:// and ends with .jpg) and past it into your post.

6. *Highlight the URL by dragging your cursor over it and clicking the "picture" button on the YaBBC tool bar. *It's the top line, third from the left. *That will place the proper img tags before and after the URL.

7. *Click the preview button at the bottom of the "Reply" page and your picture should display. *If it's OK, click Post.

This is so easy that I don't even use my own website to host my images anymore.

12-17-2006, 10:29 PM
Or you can just send them to IT. I hear you get 10 pics resized, linked and ready to post for a pound of butter or a beer. [smiley=beer.gif] [smiley=snacker.gif]

I personally prefer to use Imageshack as Doc suggests, with one exception. I use the first code, hotlink for forums I think it's called. Then you can just paste it in your post and not worry about tags.
http://img290.imageshack.us/img290/7026/1000374xv2.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

12-18-2006, 12:06 AM
Does the hotlink show the picture or just a link? I've never tried that myself.

12-18-2006, 07:53 AM
Just copy and paste Hotlink for forums 1. It shows the pic.
http://img177.imageshack.us/img177/3936/1000362wh3.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

12-18-2006, 08:09 AM
The Hotlink for forum 1 already has the tags in place. You just have to remember so that you don't use the board tags as well. ;D

12-19-2006, 11:53 AM
I also use imageshack but have never figured out how to post multiple photos in one post. :( :( Help me out folks :-[ :-[

12-19-2006, 12:03 PM
You have to download their tool bar in order to post multiple pics at one time. They have the instructions at the bottom of your pic page.

12-19-2006, 11:20 PM
Thanks MM I'll give that a try.

12-20-2006, 07:09 AM
When I have more than 1 pic in a post this what I do

I link them at Imageshack as normal and then paste the link into notepad and repeat for as many pics as I have.

Then I cut and paste the links from notepad to the sniffer post.

12-20-2006, 08:32 AM
That is a great idea Allfish. Goodbye ImageShack tool bar. *;D

12-28-2006, 11:42 AM
Gruman, Imageshack is saying your image does not exist.

why are all my photos this small?.....I checked off the resize box @ 640x480(for message boards) ....help please

01-28-2007, 10:25 AM
You're posting the thumbnail rather than the actual image. *The surest way to post the image you want is to open it full size on your screen from the host site and right click on it. *Then look under "properties". *That will give you the actual URL for the full size image. *Copy the URL and past it into your post.

BTW, 640 X 480 images are too large for the sniffer boards. *The right edge will be missing if you post an image that size. *You need to re-size you pictures to no more than 475 pixels wide with a photo editor or one of the utilities that have been recommended on these boards before you up load them to the hosting site.

The old sniffer software would allow images up to 640 pixels wide. *I don't know why the new board software won't allow this. *I can't figure out how to change this limitation. *Maybe Deb knows how. *It would be a lot more convenient for our users if "standard" 640 X 480 web scaled pictures could be posted.

Here is your picture at 640 X 480:

Here it is at 475 wide:

01-28-2007, 02:26 PM
You're still trying to post the thumbnail. *Scroll to the bottom of the image shack page to see the links for the full image.

Copy the URL for the direct link to the image into your post. *Drag your mouse over the entire URL with the left button depressed in order to high light it. *Then click the picture tool in the YaBBC tags tool bar to automatically add the image tags. *It's the button in the first row, third from the left. * Or you can just type
before the URL and
at the end.

Fred, I'm not sure what you are saying. Cutting and pasting should be a feature of your computer rather than the board.

It should be formatted like this:

You can check out your picture posting by using the Preview function each time you start a thread or reply.

04-03-2007, 08:08 AM

Do you mean I actually figured this thing out. I knew it could not be that tough but it sure had me stumped. It is actually quite easy ( once you figure it out). I am a member of another forum that has an attachment paper clip now that makes it real easy.

04-03-2007, 08:32 AM
The only problem is that the right side of the image is cut off because you forgot to re-size it down to 450 pixels wide. ;)

04-03-2007, 09:42 AM

How about this It really is not cut off this time I just suck at the photo thing. Thank you though I will get it right if it kills me.

04-03-2007, 09:43 AM
Oops it looked good in the preview. Why is that?

04-03-2007, 10:05 AM
The standard photo is bigger than the web site will allow. You will either have to download a photo resizing software or use the resizing software on your photo site listed as smaller than 450 pixels.

04-03-2007, 10:11 AM
Photobucket says the size is 320 by 240 do I need to go smaller

04-03-2007, 10:20 AM
If you right click on the picture and then click on properties you will see the dimensions are 640 x 480 for your pic.

04-03-2007, 10:23 AM
Thanks I will work on that

04-03-2007, 10:26 AM

04-04-2007, 10:10 PM
Thanks MetalMouth I was wondering what I did wrong. I still can't see them. Believe it or not it took me a month to figure out how to do this. I bought a computer 3 months ago for my 4 year old. I have not had one for about 16 years when their was no internet. I was In college then got an accounting degree and hated it so I decided to pound nails. Don't need a computer to pound nails.

ISBF, your picture is slightly cut off because it is 600 pixels wide and only 450 fit on a page. If you were to resize the picture to 450 wide, the entire picture would fit on the screen.

Note: With the latest version on the Sniffer it will only accomodate 480 wide.

This is resized to 450 pix wide.

You have to resize your pic before loading to Moment of Fame. Here's a free download of software that will resize pictures.

Once you have the pics max width of 450 pix you can load to Moment of Fame. The link Moment of Fame provided on your pic above just happened to be a bad link. When I resized and reloaded to Moment of Fame and used the new link it worked.

Thanks Ill try that link to resize makes a hell of a difference 1 more ? why cant I see the photo when i post I just see a square with an x thanks again.............ron

If you try and upload another pic and use the new link Moment of Fame provides it should work. The other link was just bad for some reason.

Your link should look like this.

I see you have a 12ft Klamath, I have a 14ft Klamath.

Hip Hip Hurray..I almost lost my mind on that one..

Good job! This free resizing software is the best I've found or I should say that Docstressor found it. You can do a whole folder full of pics all at once or one at a time.

test;http://img47.imageshack.us/img47/8278/newmelonestrout002xr2.th.jpg I guess I can post pic's now, but don't tell anyone ;) seems a bit small but what the heck ;D

seems a bit small but what the heck ;D

You did well my son. Next time don't pick the "thumbnail" code, that is why it is small. There is a regular code link and a thumbnail code link.

12-10-2007, 09:03 AM
Mickey, you want to check the boxes that say remove code and resize before you download your pic to Imageshack. Then all you have to do is copy the top URL code "forums" next to your pic on My Images and paste it here. Nice job!

12-11-2007, 06:10 PM
When I loaded the pic I noticed a couple of big long URL's, so I just right clicked the pic and posted the propertys. I'll do it again after I get back out and catch a fish that's worthy :D It's nice to have a thread to pratice on, thanks ;) Don't tell GVF, SuperDave or Dennis, or Metal Mouth, those are my picture posting friends ;D ;D ;D I"d hate to burn bridges ;)

Mickey is figuring out how to post pics of himself..... now they'll be no end to it . ;) ;D ;D ;D

If you rescale the piture down to 460 x 345, it will fit in the column.

Looks like 800x600 is the right size. Interesting effect when clicking on the image.
