View Full Version : Lousy Weather For Duck Hunting

I havent gone out yet after ducks cause it's still early and it has been blue bird weather except for our one day storm. As much as I want to go I just don't want to go and just sit there slathering on sun tan lotion and insect repellent staring at an empty blue sky. I don't need to shoot a limit of ducks but I like to know I will probably get a couple shots and my dog will get a couple retrieves. Although I plan to make it out there sometime soon no matter the weather cause I just got to.
as a tune up I took my lab Sprig out to my pheasant club Hastings Is. He was awesome. Flushed a dozen pheasants and delivered to hand the ones I shot. Responded immediately to whistle commands. He was a machine out there. He performed way better than I did with the shotgun. I think he gets a little pissed off when I miss.
if anyone has been out duck hunting let us know how you have done. Good luck out there, be safe and pray for storms

I walked around Napa a couple days ago. Not much water and could walk in tennis shoes just about everywhere. only saw one Mudhen...
Hopefully, some good weather will come soon and get some birds moving and coming down.

Congrats on Sprig doing a good job on the ringnecks.

We have been doing well, lots of mallards. With no water around, we are kind of at an advantage the way I hunt ducks. I kayak hunt a lot, and in the Delta, you will get a bunch of birds flying at first light, but after, they hug the tules. I slow troll a broke back floating rapala, and jump shoot them. There are also some pocket ponds up in the foothills that I jump shoot birds off of, and they have been loaded with mallards. I drove through Sutter area this weekend, and a lot of dry rice fields. I think we are going to have to get creative to make this a good duck year for sure!

I hunted opening weekend for 11 Saturday and 4 Sunday. Mostly gadwall with a couple spoons thrown in for good measure. My brother hunted the next Sunday about 40 yards away from my opening weekend spot and he killed his 7 (mallard, 2 sprig, 4 widg) by 745. Hoping to get back out this weekend but these 60 hr work weeks out of town really put a hurtin on that

PS Both mutts on their 1st hunt

Nice going Steel, great looking dogs. I gave up my club memberships so it's the bay and sloughs hunting for me. Where did you shoot those ducks?

For No Weather November, it's been better than expected. We went out again today and added another 8 ducks to the season tally... Our highlight of the day was cleaning out 3 ducks with 3 shots.

A little jump shooting on the way home paid off big time! :)
