Anybody know when they'll be up here? I'm wondering if the run will start earlier this year due to the weather... Late March, early April??? Opinions?

Going to depend on flows. It may be bleak on the AR this year.

Hopefully it's better than it was last year on the AR but I'm not holding my breathe.

I have friends that will average a few hundred shad in a normal water year that caught 4 last year in the AR.

Freeport and the sac? The shad still seemed to be biting in mid-spring, whenever I would be driving to school I'd see guys killing them on the line in freeport in the AM and late evening. Hard to fish there from shore now, you need salmon gear to get out to the travel lanes. Boaters slay them though, these old dudes would still average 20-30 fish a session from their 12' tin can.

So with me moving down from the mountains recently, I've never fished for shad. When I think of shad, I think of bait, is that what all the fuss is about or do people actually eat them? or is it just something to do.....

Some folks do eat them, mtn, but I think they are more commonly just caught for sport.

These are American Shad and are larger than the species commonly used for bait.

I have only caught a couple and was ready to really dedicate some time to it last year but the bite never really developed so I didn't bother since I'm a couple hours away. They call these the poor mans tarpon. haha. You use light trout tackle some 6 lb test and have a blast when you get those 2 pounders. They fight like crazy. You need good flows to bring them up so may be another bad year but let's hope not.

Unless a series of major storms comes through to fill up the reservoirs, I doubt we'll be seeing an increase in flows to he AR or any of the rivers for that matter. So it sounds like the shad run may suffer just like the salmon and steelhead runs.

Sounds like these things put up a pretty good fight, so it may be worth looking into just for fun. But it looks like the run happens right about the same time the bite starts happening on my favorite upcountry lakes. :angling:

When the cottonwoods start dropping their fluff it is shad time.

Everyone called me crazy last year, but they were in the system late February-1st week of march when we got one of those big warm storms. They were all males from what I saw though, like little tiny males, nothing bigger than 1lb. They shot up the river and were gone within a week. Seals and birds were working them near Freeport, probably massacred all of them.

Come on fellas..... Shad smell funny, they have them grimy little lips that tear, they are full of bones, AND they taste like crap.

Stick to bass....... Folsom is about to kick off!

I can believe this. Late March/Early April was the only time I got any decent/traditional Shad action and it only lasted a week. I am guessing it will be the same this year too. But I fish the American and don't really know **** from shinola when it comes to true Shad action. That's just how it was for me last year.......sucky.

Saw the first bit of cottonwood in the wind this morning. Gonna try to dial in shad from the kayak on the Sac this year, it's close to home so might as well.
