I fished a couple mile stretch of river around Glenn Hall Park yesterday evening. Did not see or catch any shad. I would have thought that if they were up to Verona they would be up to J Street by now.

I ran into a gentleman that was fly fishing a bit down stream from J Street and he said he has not gotten into them either. He did give me a shad fly called a Bloody Maria. Thanx for that. I look forward to trying it out this weekend.

Shad need flow. With only 500 cfs coming out of natomas I wouldn't expect too many shad on the AR this year. They're catching in Verona and I heard even Colusa. I would expect most of the shad to go with the flow and head up the Sac without giving the AR a thought. Maybe a few will turn up but not many. A few more might head up the Feather but I wouldn't expect much there either.

There are shad being caught in Chico right now.

I have a bad feeling about the American River shad run.

Those Bloody Marias work well. You don't need fly gear to fish them either.

Patience...it's still April. Not June/July.

I hear you. The best time for me has always been June on the AR. Flows on the AR will bump up next month but not much. And if there are shad in Chico I think that does not bode well for the AR. Maybe the fish out there are early because of the warm water temps. If that is the case they will likely blow past the AR. Shad fishing has been on the decline in the AR for a long time. And the lack of water this year will only make things worse. Time will tell.

The first couple of wave will always go up into the Feather or the Upper Sacramento River. The last couple wave of fish will go into the American River. I've notice this for nearly two decades with just about any fish except for sturgeon.

Have you ever seen them skip a river because lack of flows?

I've never witness a year where they skip a river entirely due to the lack of flow. It's just a matter of timing and how many fish are going to enter the system. I will admit that there are slightly more fish during high flows than low flow, but never seen an incident where they skip the river entirely. There are some years that some parts of the AR looks like a creek and it's some of the best season I've had with easy limits within an hour. Other years where the water is high and fast with slow success.

I'm not giving up yet. Looks like it's back to the Verona area for now. I'll try the American again next Wednesday.

i was out in the lower AR over the weekend. fished for a couple of hours for no fish. the fly fisherman up river from me caught a few small males. so they're in the AR system, just not in great number yet.
