View Full Version : Ghetto topwater bait

Well today I realized as I was shopping online for new baits for the spring run that Iam a broke ass kid. I can't keep buying these 40 dollar toys. And sure I could ask ma n pa for money but with college coming up I don't wanna put that burden on them.

So off to home depot, I buy some wood and take it back home.

I figure a topwater bait would be an easy starting point. I pull out a dwb so I can eyeball the general shape of the spook. I find some power tools and find a way to make them useful. I cut the wood to be 7 inches( go big or go home). Start grinding away at the nose http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160208/0835f106455e251715ee06c31cba20cb.jpgand I end up with a crude looking pencil thing. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160208/1dcc3fecbad82473975a4ab80108cec0.jpga little sanding to soften it up

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160208/1660caaaa40b4e5ca853b2d55fb4061e.jpgokay I don't what the **** this thing is at this point

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160208/14397922f3b11cea5236e2c49cd817b8.jpgbut with a little magic I got something that looks halfway decent. Still lots of work to do but it's comin along. I'll keep you guys posted on how it ends up.

****s hard when u don't have the right gear but I'm making work.

That's a nice looking pencil you got there. They laughed at my broken drumstick spook as well, but it caught fish!

Good luck, Brick.

Looks like most of the work is behind you... for that one plug. I have some old school top water plugs that have a cable that goes through the body and attaches to each hook and the front eye. Do DWB's have something similar or do the hooks just screw into the wood? The latter way seems easier but maybe not so secure?

DWBs have a wire that runs within the center of the plug.

This is not a DWB but a TW plug building kit with the same design concept to give you an idea
http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160208/12e1ecf0c3dfbb8d2caeebb020451268.jpg

This is a kit from same company but I believe in the 3" version. This one is assembled with the eyes screwed into the wood with no through wire.

Ya I'm gonna make more blanks to today an experiment with wire through and screw in eyes. I know wire through is way more secure

Not a big fan of the screw in style. I've built a few of them and use occasionally for bass but not going to throw them for hogs.

Gotta admire your determination to build from scratch. I ordered the kits that way I can dedicate more time to paint.

Made a few more bodies today. So now it's time to start experimenting with wiring it.

Even made a lil spook for dink stripers and bass just for ****s and gigs.

Any suggestions on what wire I should pick up?

Haha you will get kick outta this one. S waver attempt 1#. I'm pushing the limits on the little skill I have and trying glides since I'm making bodies right now. Still needs shaping but here is the basic form I got. Gotta figure out what tail I'm gonna use...suggestions? I was thinking rip one off a plastic swim bait or make a wood one and joint it on there

Check out Saltys for accessories, kits, videos, etc.. For $6-8 you can get an entire kit to build a lure that needs only to be painted.

Trust me, unless your Michelangelo or Carlo, by the time you get done painting them they look pretty damn ghetto.

Ya iv been look at those but it takes the fun out of building it from scratch! Ya they look like crap but it will all pay off when I get one. Haha nah I'll probably end up buying some from their website.

Biggest reason I like the kits, they are pre drilled for the through wires, eyes, and most important the weight. The trial and error involved with the balance can be a PITA even with the kits sometimes, don't want to think what it would be like from scratch.

And it's that trial and error and the expert paint and finish I don't mind paying for when I buy a DWB or any other custom bait.

Ok all three proto types are being sealed right now. 1 is a wire through with the weight more towards the middle. 2 is another wire through with the weight more towards the rear. 3 is a screw in eyes with weight towards rear.

Once they dry i will install the weight, hook eyes and start the paint job

So the plugs are still drying from the seal bath so I,whipped up more protos this evening. Here is an 8'inch trout glide...not complete yet and I'm holding it upside down http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160213/7938bb7c8190916a22be0c541747b5bb.jpg

A wooden fluke. Gonna try to make it a jerk/ glide bait dunno how well it will work yet. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160213/d5ac6e76584a5ee7af96f71d28871794.jpg I also drilled the waver and put it to seal up.

Been busy with school, swim and other **** but got time to measure out the weight yesterday and epoxy it in today. They look good on paper but will it work? Just ordered some wire, couplings for the entry of the wire hole and some joints for the swimmer. Next step is the paint job

Looks like it's sitting in the water similar to that DWB. Looks good man

Looks good, keep at it.

For shaping the lures, you could use a files, takes bigger chunks off and doesn't create as much dusk. Then slowly sand it down.

As for screw eye hook hangers, I wouldn't worry about durability. I make all my lures with screw eyes and never had a problem. I have straightened 2/0 Owner ST-36 treble hooks on many occasions. I have since went to ST-41.

That's good to know. I was thinking, a freaking kwick fish has screw in hook hangers and people land 50lb salmon on them so why wouldn't it work on here but what ever already drilled the holes on a few so might as well try wire through.

Just for kicks, we buy more inferior products when it comes to durability. Here is the second S-Waver that cracked on me. And the fish was only 33".

And the other photo is my own topwater lure with screw eyes. 41", best to date on my own lures. A little 2 part epoxy and proper time to dry and you won't have issues with screw eyes.

Nice fish! Especially for a top water fish in the metro sac! Ya thats what im doing. Using long screw eyes and epoxy

What is your wood species, Brick? Looks like maybe doug fir? Kwik's are pretty dense plastic whereas doug fir seems a little more weak/less dense? Perhaps something to consider for future screw eye attachments. Just an idea. Looking really fishy though!

These are pine but I got some teak coming soon. Ya I figured it would be soft so that's what the epoxy is for, extra strength. We shall see. I ordered lots of wire too so I will be making a good amount of wire through as well.

Cool, Brick!

I think your lures are gonna get hammered even with no paint! Put some time walkin' them dogs and you're gonna get some action; I think most fish react to action and movement first and color is further down the line for importance.

Good luck,

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160222/ee5976ce431b2303fee09a7eed3c4435.jpgonly worked on the baby spook today. Paint is done. I wanted to do red gills but said **** it just cause I didn't feel like going and buying red paint. Now time to give it an epoxy top coat and it's done. As you can see this one was rushed cause I didn't sand the epoxy underneath very well. But what ever this one is the test dummie. My 7 inchers will be a lot better hopefully.

Even put a little encouragement for those hesitant fish on the bottom of the plug.

Gonna wire the other lures tonight and try to finish them up this week.

Hey, nice job on the lures( and fish). I am not sure if you have investigated the shrink wrap skins on e-bay, but they are also pretty cheap and can make the whole painting thing go away:wink:

Side note-will someone pretty please, with sugar on top, tell me how to post a profile pic. I am looking and looking, to no avail!
