So it begins.

I was fishing for stripers between Knights landing and Verona tonight and had a nice take down. A hard fight ensued, drag taken out by fish, couple of runs, I missed a couple of net shots... Turns out it was a shad!

I bet they are stacked like cordwood at the feather river confluence. Might need to investigate that this weekend after I'm done with UCD picnic day!

Looks like i'll need to bring some gear with me when i head down to the valley in a week or so... Need me some crab bait for when it finally opens if it ever does up here.

The almost famous King of Shad will be at Verona next week trying to hide from all the old girlfriends while keeping his line wet and his secret fly hidden from all others view. Since this is a bragging post let me tell you this old guy has forgotten more about Shad than we will ever know. 25,000+ Shad means braggin' rights for sure. Look for the flourescent orange hat and say "Hi Bill, where should I go"? Tell them you got referred by Nevets and you will get the star treatment.

Did pretty good considering I was only out from 5 to 7. Landed 8, lost 4 and missed a few bites. It's nice to be able to actually drift and not have to use a bobber. I'll be back at it again soon. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160511/6a5142e6bc9689bc4374e4d7cea87351.jpg

Any word from the Shad king outta Verona? We were there last Tuesday and it was dead, like beat a horse dead.

:beatdeadhorse5:

Only about three boats, when I expected there to be more like 50-100! We didn't catch any shad or see the other two boats get into them either. Weird.

Saturday was not too good at Verona. From 6:00AM in the morning until I left at about 3:00PM I got 6, another boat got about 9 and another maybe 4. Not sure if the water is just too dirty still, or what the issue is. The guys in two of the other boats that fish there all the time for shad said this year has been horrible.
I deboned 5 of these as best I could and the little one became striper bait.

Hey, Sky,

How was the deboning process.. Did it work and any insight?

Thanks!

Ha. Good to know it wasn't just us hack shad anglers struggling! I wonder if many fish are heading up the AR since it has decent flows this year and they are simply bypassing the Sac? But like you say it sounds like they are thick in the Feather, so kind of a conundrum about Verona so far this season.

Maybe next week...

Hey, Sky,

How was the deboning process.. Did it work and any insight?

Thanks!

I'm slowly getting better. I do not keep the meat on the skin as Captain Vincent Russo does in the video, but I still do pretty much what he does.
I've gone back and reviewed the Russo video (again and again), and I think he is pulling out a lot more meat to throw away than I originally thought. I think he is pulling out most of the red meat in the deboning process as well, where I was thinking that it stayed in.
I remove the top/back section, the lower/rib section, and the two lobes (of white meat) in the middle of the back half of the fillet. These lobes sit on top of the red meat that I think he is pulling out, but it's kind of hard to tell in the video. It looks like he is not actually getting much more meat than that in the video.

The front middle section of the filet looses a lot of meat because of the three rows of bones that come together there. A larger fish lets me get a strip of that out from between the rows, but it must be a larger fish.
He says in the video you MUST get as much meat as you can on the original fillet, and that is true. If you can stay very close to the back and ribs cutting off the initial fillet, the deboning is a bit easier, and you get more meat (duh!).
I've been trying to find any shortcuts I can to speed the process up. I don't scale the fish before filleting them, although that might be a mistake. The scales make a mess to clean up out of the meat, and off the counter. Since shad do not have fin spines I plan on scaling them next batch and see if it helps.
My next batch I will concentrate on setting up an area where I can work in a comfortable position (neck gets really sore working at the kitchen counter), and with regard to the meat that I know I can get, speed up the removal process.
I'll still work a couple fish each session to try to keep the meat intact on the skin and see if I can find ways to save more meat, but I'm beginning to think what I get off now will likely not get much better.

I wish I could get into a 30 -40 fish day so I could pick and choose the fish I keep. Then I could just keep the larger fish that are easier to fillet and more productive. Plus I get to catch more fish!

What's the color of the water like up at Shanghai. If it's cleaner, maybe that's the issue at Verona. The water there is not very clear. Running about 60-65 degrees last weekend, and not very clear.
