Started chasing Steelhead in Southern California back when it was legal. Anybody have any Stories about Southern Cali. Steelhead? I will share one first, I was scouting Malibu creek in the early eighties and bumped into a hard core Steelhead guy who told me that he would sneak into the Point Mugu Naval base and sit under the bridge at the head of tide (Mugu Lagoon). The mouth is always open and in season he would get a Steelhead there that followed the freshwater scent on a gob of Nitecrawlers. I wanted to go do that so bad but I already had a court appearance for sneaking across the Lagoon to surf the inlet there and the next tiicket would mean $500 and or 6 mos in jail lol.:trout:

I think the big wet year before the drought 2011? The dfg netted a 36 inch steelhead in the Arroyo Trabuco just north of San Mateo creek in San Clemente. I remember seeing a pic. of it....

Malibu Creek has a year round flow and still has a small run in it believe it or not. Sometimes someone gets one off the pier, (near Famous Alice's restaurant lol)

I didn't think that they could be in warm waters

Steelhead have adapted in areas, (So Cal. and the Deschutes River Oregon) to survive 80 degree water! Lately in SoCal they have had trouble dealing with NO water lol. But they will reload if the water comes.

Good thread! Sad to see the steelies decline so much down south. Heard the LA river used to have an epic run back in the day. Fish need good water tho.

It would be a miracle if I could fish for steelhead in Texas I miss the native fish that California offered in its rivers.

The SoCal streams had the largest runs to size ratio I read. Of course the stream sizes weren't too big mostly lol. I'm pretty sure I read that the Santa Ynez River behind Santa Barbara had a run as large as 200,000 fish!

It might have been a DFG rescue of Steelhead juveniles.....sounds more logical....I did read it a few times in the past in researching socal steelhead.

In the past few years there were landlocked spawned out adults in the Ventura river lagoon. The last 3 miles or so of that system is replenished by a 2nd stage sewage treatment plant.

Am taking a newbie to Lake Casitas and in checking up on it found a video of a native rainbow in smolt colors going down through the fish ladder on the Ventura river nearby. The fish ladder hasnt had water in it for 5 years so it was probably a rainbow who went "rogue" lol
