View Full Version : Pardee and Fools like me?

Any other fools going to the Pardee opener tomorrow? It has sucked the last several years but I'm willing to give them a chance. Hopefully they can bring it back to what it was years ago... tons of fish. Some tagged for free rods, reels, food and other goodies. Those were the days!

be wise to drive over Middle bar bridge to get a feel for what color the water will be
The last thing you want is to fish in Chocolate pudding water.and you won`t get a refund for it
the water going into Pardee has been high almost every day for the last Month.

Keep in mind, they did not plant during the offseason. Today was the first plant, 3000lbs of 2lb fish and 3000lb of 1.5lb. New fish won't travel far in the first day or so as they try to acclimate.

Man, I think they should all limit, reports of almost 12,000 pounds of trout planted! Blue/silver km's and green and yellow pb were posted as the favorite baits.

Report. Limited with fish up to 3lbs. First hour 5- 6 was dead. When it got light it was on! Everyone was hooking up. All methods seemed to work. walked around and one spot was catching just as good as any other. PB & Kastmasters did the trick for me. The wind came up big time and it was brutal. It blew the boat house into the cove and tweaked the ramp. Sorry no pics. Didn't want to break out the camera in that rain & wind. These are gorgeous fish. Big, fat and full fins. Not your average truck trout! MUCH BETTER OPENER THAN THE LAST SEVERAL YEARS!

Plug-n-jug, was it the EBMUD boat house or the marina? I heard they shut down the marina because it broke loose, but maybe they meant the boathouse?

By boat house I was referring to where they sell tackle and rent boats by the island. I did not notice how the one in the rec cove faired. I thought for sure the pontoon and rental boats were going down. Never seen white caps on Pardee before. It was crazy but I'm glad I went!

I went Saturday but didn't want to fight the morning crowd. Arrived at about 10:45 a.m.

Only three cars ahead of me. The guy at the kiosk said that Friday everyone was killing it.

The comment about the fish not dispersing initially played true. The very first cove as you approach the marina was wall-to-wall fisher persons. I did not go there initially because it was way too crowded. A guy later told me you couldn't miss if you fished there.

I tried the cove right before the spillway. I jigged using a 1/32 ounce jig head with a dark Berkley minnow. Got two in the first 15 minutes. Also threw out Power Bait on a second pole (no bites at all).

It died - for me at least - for the next four hours. I moved to about four other locations with no luck.

Eventually the first cove at the marina lightened up. I fished a corner jigging at about 4:00 p.m. Three fish on the same jig - two of which hit about four feet from shore - within 30 minutes. Others were killing it with Power Bait and what appeared to be about one and a half foot leaders.

Interesting note: wardens were out. When I left, a warden was at the kiosk and asked to check my cooler. No worries when you're not doing anything wrong.

Sounds like everyone did well, way to go! Heard the wardens were checking all vehicles leaving, back seat, trunk, coolers, etc. and I like that. Also heard one group was issued a warning about being over-limits and didn't heed the warning. Understand the wardens went back later to check on the group and busted them big time for having an enormous amount of fish over the limit:angry: Hope they took all their poles, tackle, etc.

Yea I guess 5 fish isn't enough to feed a family SHH. I don't like mine frozen anyway so I eat mine even other day till there gone usually 3 meals for me and wife if there decent sized like these 2 if there little stream trout. Filet stuck on top a bowl in the fridge. It's real simple if you need more fish there is always tomorrow.

Ok, this one is for the more educated than me, is the orange flesh because the water at the hatchery is the same as the water at Pardee? I don't think it's due to the hatchery food? If it is the hatchery food, is it different than say what Mt. Lassen feeds?

On the topic of trout meat, what's everyone's opinion on lassen trout meat? We have them at work and are getting complaints from time to time from restaurants about the firmness of flesh. Every Tuesday the lassen tuck shows up and drops off 300lbs of them and we process them for local restaurants. I think even fresh out of the water, lassens are super soft. They taste good but the texture sure the hell isn't firm. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170220/a0936d1f683bd76a4f3f3efb4b2f57e6.jpg

Boy oh boy... I was there on Friday... All I can say is, best trout opener ive ever been too.. Fish all 2-3 lbs all day long on the fly. Had a great time with my uncle and it was just memorable. Saturday was a zoo, brought my kids back to enjoy some good family fishing outing and it was a lot slower then Friday. But we still manage to catch limit. Cant wait till next trip, their estimating 45,000lbs this year to be planted and seeking additional private company to plant too. Awesome.. FISH ON

Fished saturday with my son, barbless hooks CnR many fish kept 6 bleeders between us. We hiked away from the crowds ended up directly across from the marina. Plenty of fish on that side, no reason to fight the crowds. Probably landed 30+ between the 2 of us fished 7am to 12pm. Kastmasters, spinners, mini jigs, power worms, power eggs, they all worked. Fish were shallow.

Cal, do you have a trick for getting the pin bones out of fillets or is it just feel?

CAL.NDN
02-22-2017, 06:47 PM
Katch I just locate them buy feel then place the filet knife right on the side and slice down to the skin and then put knife on the other side and repeat with the angle slice to the skin and they only go down about to end of rib cage so you don't have to slice long ways all the way down to tail. It should be about a quarter inch section you are removing. Once both sides are sliced to the skin I I just push my finger down the slice and it peels right out. Once you figure the angle out you will lose mabey a bite but it's worth it. I hope this makes sense. These are skinless rib and pin bones gone that I did earlier https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170223/004209c31dc242ef5ebedbf68d237723.jpg

Those fish are coming from the Moke river hatchery. EBMUD worked a deal with DFW, eggs were purchased in Oregon by EBMUD and DFW raised the fish, 35,000 pounds, all are going into Pardee, I believe the concessionaire paid for the feed. So, what river feeds Pardee? The Moke! What river is the hatchery getting water from? The Moke! Same water, plus it's only about 8-10 miles to truck them!!!!!

All my party was skunked but me I got one on eggs and 2 on jigs It was dead all over no stringers to be seen and if there was it was lucky to have one on it so I guess I got lucky. Got dinner anyway and got to get out and enjoy the weather with the family so it was a great day. I only got one on other side of Lake after a few hrs we went to check out rec area because it was cleared out so I figured it was lights out there.
