Lafayette 3-12-17 with a short video.
On the water about 7am. A few other boats already on the lake. Made our way to the back end and put out lines. Within five minutes Mike has fish number one. A nice 16" trout. Ten minutes later it was my turn and I land a 15". Then Mike again with a 15". All caught on white power eggs with a brown power worm.
We had lots of bites and lost a couple of really nice fish. Around 9am the bite just shut down so we figured we would give the troll a go. I was pulling a Gvf Lures (https://www.facebook.com/gvf.lures) pink Gold digger and dodger when a 16.5" trout hit. Nice fun fight too!
We made a couple more passes around the lake for another bite or two and then went back to drift fishing that landed us one more trout. We called it a day early because it was really hot. It's unofficially official...Spring has sprung! I got my first sunburn of the year as did Mike.
Had a little lunch in downtown Lafayette on our way home. Got our five fish cleaned and filleted and now sitting in front of the fan as I write this post.
Here are some pics from the day and a quick video.
Happy Sunday my friends!
M&K.

Great Report. I got a kayak from my brother for Christmas but haven't tried it out yet since it was windy and muddy. That might be a good place to test it out. How many times have you made the Sniffer Magazine now 100?

Mike and Kristy -

Thanks for the info and the photographs. I have never been to Lafayette but might try it (I have a brother who lives nearby).

I have a couple of questions. My brother says you can walk the entire lake (about three miles). Is it imperative that you have a boat? Also, I am curious as to how you fish the white eggs and piece of power worm. And lastly, your photograph depicts the hook showing. Does it not matter not to cover the hook?

Thanks for any help and apologies if I am asking trade secrets.

Hi Pete, You don't have to have a boat. There are many docks and shore spots around the lake. The best shore spot being the farthest one towards the back end on the right.
For how we fish the eggs,... I just use a basic trout set up. Medium egg sinker, barrel swivel, 2-3' leader and then my hook and bait. When bait fishing or drift fishing the set up is the same. Your bait floats a few feet off the bottom just above most weeds etc.
I like to have my hook showing as they seem to get hooked more often but it's not necessary. Sometimes I have three eggs dangling like the pic and other times I will hook on both ends so it forms around the hook more. I usually use a whole power worm but this one was munched on a few times before I took the picture. Hope some of this helps.
Kristy.

Ha ha! I am lucky enough to get in there every now and again. Anyways Lafayette would be a great place for your first yak adventure! Fish the back half of the lake or just watch where the other boats are.
Kristy.

Thank you. We hooked a few undersize sturgeon today so now I want to get back out and try to get a keeper. I fished there from shore one time and remember a lot of reeds. The kayak would take care of that problem. I have a little manual Scotty downrigger so I would try one pole on that down 5-10 feet and one top line.

Kristy -

Thank you for responding and the tips. It's always great to speak to people about their successful techniques and experiences. When I saw the baited hook, I could just hear my father telling me - when he would take me trout fishing when I was in grammar school - to cover the entire hook with salmon eggs and one marshmallow. How times, techniques, and baits have changed.

Anyway, thank you for your help!
