I caught this cat the other day while carp fishing. I was told it was a blue, but now I have had other people tell me it was a white cat. What is it?

Im pretty sure thats a bullhead?

I chose "other" even though I think it's a white. I have been looking up different species of catfish for a little over an hour now, and this is what I found.

A Blue catfish has a deeply forked tail (like a channel cat) and has long straight anal rays (30-35). Also, the upper jaw hangs over the lower.

A White catfish has a slightly forked tail with the anal fin being shorter and more round (20-24 rays). They also have a blunt, rounded head.

The fish you caught has a slightly forked tail. I tried counting anal rays but ::)it appears to be "not too many" ;D your fish also has a big, round head with the bottom jaw over the upper. The main problem I have with all this is the extra rays under the tail. Along with other traits it almost reminds me of a bullhead but I couldn't find anything to back up my thinking. :)

Thanks for the challenge and NICE FISH!http://www.fishsniffer.com/forumsyabb2008/Smilies/thumbsup.gif

Chanel? What ever it is, it does not look quiet right to me? Anyone else agree? :-?

Im pretty sure thats a bullhead?

WAY WAY WAY too large to be a bullhead...gotta be some sort of record if it is a bullhead. ;)
looks more like a white cat to me. some channels do have extreme large heads and so does the white, but the channels...they are darker in colors and have a fork tail much like the blue's.

this guy tail is pretty round to me(unless you got another better pic of the tail), otherwise im going to go with white catfish ;)

although there is a pretty good chance its a blue, since the anal fin seems pretty straight. can't go wrong with either 2 :D

BIG_ONE that is not too big to be a bullhead. I have caught yellow bullheads that big at the park near my house. They are rare but they get that big. I really do think it is a white catfish though because they are closely related to bullheads, and their bodies are similar.

I believe that it is a white. The barbels should be a different color than a channels, and the anal fin ray count should be different as well. Most of the cats that I thought were whites, had bulbous looking heads, to big for their bodies. That fish also looks emaciated, which may mean slow growth, which also can attribute to a big head small body.

true, but if that really is a bullhead...gotta be close to a record or something. looks like a good 5lbs if its a bullhead. still nice fish, catfish with gigantic heads are actually pretty tasty for some reason ;D

it reminds me of a cartoon catfish

That is a white. It looks like a sexually mature male, but I'm suprised he doesn't also have the dark eyes they usually get. It could also be an old female; head keeps growing. But it is absolutely a normal, larger white.

What bait did you use for this guy?

Hey Justin that's a white. I caught one about 8lbs at Clear Lake during my first Carp Derby with NCCC fishing the seawall. There really rare so not many people know how to ID them in person but the head and skinny body are a dead giveaway.

Tight Lines!

Definitely a white. *Not rare at all. *In fact they are probably the most abundant CF in the Delta. *Big head, small body, shallow fork a sure giveaway.

Minnow , I was going to ask you that when I saw that pic first posted , I think its a " white " ? We used to catch those about 40 yrs ago in Shadow Cliffs , around that size and a bit bigger . Although we caught them on Valveeta Cheese , most all of them had 10-12" planter rainbows in their bellies , the biggest one we caught had 3 trout in its belly !

I caught two of them looked identical to those only maybe a little bit smaller out of Antioch last weekend. I'd be interested in knowing what they are also.

That is a white, I caught a lot of them this last month that had huge heads like that.
Kinda looks like Michael Phelps' first pic ever on that first one! (Super sperm cell!)

12-09-2008, 08:42 PM
i think that"s a white cat too. Doesn't really look like a blue thats just my opinion though :-?

It looks pretty much like a Cat from south Mexico which scientific name is (Lacantunia enigmatica).
For me looks similar, i'm not 100% sure but......... check this http://scienceblogs.com/strangerfruit/2006/10/a_new_family_genus_species_of.php
