I know leather carp are very rare here in California so I challenge all carp fishermen to try and catch one first and post the pic. here as proof of their greatness. Winner gets bragging rights on this board. If any of you guys don't know what a leather carp is, its a carp with no scales at all or with a small odd scales along the back.

you are right a rare fish indeed, i hope this is a catch and release deal as it would be a shame to see a rare fish die for bragging rights.

Of course people are encouraged to catch and release these fish, killing such a rare animal would be shame.

pretty rare for california, not rare at all in euro. and they look very similar with mirror, some mirror hardly have any scales and people get them confused with a leather, or can it be...they're the same? :o ;D 8-)

Leathers are rarer in europe than you think, one reason they are held in esteem, for years if they had no scales all over with the exception of a couple near the root of the tail they were deemed leathers, however ive noticed a trend towards people saying that this wouldnt be a true leather, bit nit picky for me but we all have our ideals ;D

not all are dark in color and they are not entirely scaleless. I think it is a leather.

that could highly be a mirror, a leather carp dorsal scales is either incomplete or missing, and one scale is like REALLY bigger than the other on the dorsal scale and not really a perfect shape, but i could be wrong...

I think you would need a clearer pic to tell for sure. You don't have any more pic's of it?

i bet a lot of people caught a leather before but thought it was a mirror...leather carp also have scales in the middle like the mirror but instead the scales are not in shape and really really large and and small and basically all crashed together in a irregular order, and some pieces are missing or incomplete, while the mirror have a more even scales, not fully even scales but most of the scales would be complete ;)

Its a mirror, lots of mirrors have just the single row of scales along the dorsal, when they have a row along the lateral line they are known as linear mirrors, sometimes they have the same large irregular scales as mirrors but allover and are known as fully scaled mirrors ;)
