You're having a better day than I am.

Nice day to be on the water, and nice shad to boot.

Thanks for the report.

This Sea Lion was having considerably more luck than us. Not sure what the brute was targeting, but it was thrashing a few fish around.

I managed three this weekend in the Garcia Bend area. Had a few more bites that did not stick. The first two, and my first of the year, came at the same time. One on each jig, a true double.
They seem to be running pretty big this year. That's a size 13 goof shoe (cheap EVA clog) in the picture.

Fished Verona for stripers on Thursday, went through 2 dozen live jumbos, caught nice keepers and out of minnows by 1030am. Tons of boats anchored at the mouth of the Feather. Saw some boats anchored shad fishing and catching nice large females coming up. With the higher flows that we had on the American, guaranteed the shad will be in. Fishing either stripers or shad next week.

I got these on Saturday. The big striper I'm guestimating at about 6 pounds.

And then I refined and nailed my shad deboning technique on Sunday. This will be so nice for smoking.
Before, when I just got a bunch of small pieces, they would always stick to the racks. That should be reduced now that the skin will be on the rack.

Nice haul
Are you brining before smoking?

Yeah, I have a brine that I soak it in for 1 to 2 days (length depends on the size of the meat chunks). Dry on racks for 4 to 6 hours to get a nice pellicle, and then into the smoker for a few hours as low as I can keep it heat wise. I let it heat up the last 20 - 30 minutes to get the meat temp up to 165 to kill any critters.

With all the processing and the work to prep and smoke, I can sure appreciate people that live a subsistence lifestyle. It's a whole hell of a lot of work.

Shad burgers!!https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180505/7e4dfaa0e8cc01341d5d74fdf2be7e36.jpgI've tried them once fried couldn't do it once pickled not bad but the texture wasn't for me and had them smoked really good but couldn't get past the bones for me to strike interest in harvesting them. But If i could de bone and make them shad burgers there i may just harvest a couple. That looks amazing.

Her recipe... I just made it up and threw stuff together. I first cleaned it butterflied it and broiled it in the oven until the top was golden. Then I flake the meat off the bones the ribs all came out together which was nice. Added Mayo salt pepper bread crumbs lemon juice and green onions. Formed all that into a Patty and cook that in a pan until you know crispy. What made it really good was getting brioche buns at the Nugget.

5/8/18. Hooked 17 / landed 9. Anchored on the Sac between Elkhorn & Verona. Orange grubs and Champagne pink grubs got all the action. 13 feet of water. Most of the fish came between 1 & 3PM.

This is what hapoened, It's a little unbelievable, but hand to god it's the truth. On the way to the spot we accidentally hit a sea lion with the boat. That pictured I shared was the first victim. That sea lion we hit, I believe, was the same one that came back two other times and snatched fish from the line boatside. It was so incredible that it seemed it wanted vengeance because I didn't see any other sea lions bother any other boaters. There was a walkaround seaswirl striper and a hewescraft pilothouse that can vouch because they saw it happen and were hootn and hollerin with us as they just witnessed what had happened. I wish I had video of when it grabbed fish 2 and 3 because it was literally at the side of the boat my cousin wanted to stab the damn thing. It was effing intense!

I had sea lions munch on six of my shad this evening. They were patrolling the banks in full force.
