Hoping for some help on Pyramid. Heading up on Oct 1st with my two bros and father. We'll be boating and want to be well equipped / informed. Any thoughts on what lures are best to troll with? I hear P Line minnows are good for jigging... Thoughts on locations to target? Any other tips?

Thanks,

HH

I'm not sure if Crosby's in Sutcliffe is still open for business but if they are you can buy everything lure wise there.

Licenses and boating permits too.

Pretty much anything will work anywhere on the opener. The bite will be on especially if you find the bait balls.

First and foremost, get a copy of the 2018 regs. Read and understand them.

Opening day can be very busy so get there early or you'll be sitting in line for a long time. Not sure how early is early but I've seen them lined up on the highway at 6am.

Make sure your boat is in great running condition so you can launch fast. Have someone in the boat to drive it off the trailer and then come back in to pick people up.

Watch the wind. If you see dust clouds on either the north or south ends of the lake get off the water immediately. Use windfinder.com to get wind predictions. Anything over 10kts is typically a no go sometimes you can wait it out other times your better off to just leave the boat in the parking lot and fish the shore. Use your head, just because some fools launch doesnt mean safe.

The fish in Pyramid are voracious eaters. You've seen the lures used. They're all barbless! Color variation is often the key. It can change throughout the day so if you stop catching fish then change up, dont just keep dragging or jigging the same thing. The bite can go off and when it does that usually means the fish have moved. Boats will be pushing them around so if you catch fish at warrior one day, they might be clear down by the nets the next day.

Good luck, I'll be there after the opening rush when things settled back down.

Everything is barbless, no bait, no scents, and try to mimic what is in the lake, tui chubs and other bottom feeders as well as fry. Frog patterns work at times as well as perch. One other clue is use the size you would use to catch salmon with hoochies and such. This lake is tribal and everything is their rules only, they do enforce and I have seen coast guard out there too. Since Pelican is the major launch area guess where they will be, especially on weekends, so make sure your boat is up to snuff and has all of the proper safety gear......Jetspray

Ok, I will if I decide to use it at Pyramid.

I just grabbed two from my collection to balance the picture.

Park at least 100 feet from the shoreline and don't get stuck. Spider Point, Blockhouse from shore. Pelican Point, Separator, and North and South Nets. waders advised and a ladder helps.

Pyramid has a bunch of them, I have seen 30 ft drops very close to shore while trolling. There have also been a bunch of drownings there over the past few years. The lake shows ugly quickly as well and catches the un-aware in bad situations....Jetspray

Last couple questions.

Whats everyone's fav ladder set up and why?

What are the rules for flot tubes? do they have to follow the 250 ft from shore rule. I would only do this on a calm day, Ive read it gets very windy.

TIA Im excited for my first trip!

No, float tubes and pontoon boats for single fishermen are considered shore fishermen. So you can get right in there with the ladder guys. But I wouldn't too close.

And it's not 250' from shore, it's 250' from the fishermen. So if the ladder in 100' from shore that puts boats 350' from shore.

ladder....black, brown, white, iridescent dark green wooly bugger for flyfishing
beetles work to as do larva type under an indicator.

spin fishing,,,,, 1/4 or 3/8 oc jig heads same colors
spoons 7/8 oz in white with red or black spots, green fades to chrome, rainbow...bring a few other colors
Rapala shad raps silver

Caught 138, 106, and 97 fish respectively on the last three openers, all jigging. These fish are not picky and will follow a jig to the surface and hit it frequently.

You ideally want to target water between 80-40ft near a drop off close to shore. The farther you can get from boats the better (East shore).

As everyone here has mentioned. The wind can come up quick and be ugly. The past two openers had 4ft white caps before noon. Don't chance it stay close to the ramp in that case.

P-line lazer minnows, best colors chartruse, anything with green in it. Jig close to the bottom, or watch your FF to mark suspended fish. A drift sock can save the day if the wind comes up and you don't have an I-pilot system.

What you from the shore often depends on the bottom you are fishing. A sandy or pebble bottom allows you to use jigs or drag crank baits along the bottom. Rocks or tufa means it's time for spoons.

Here is a shore tutorial.

Thank you all for the valuable intel! Looking forward to a successful fishing trip with a family reunion on Pyramid for the opener!

Any tips for how early we can get there, how to handle permits, avoid the rush? This will be the centerpiece of our fishing week together, any intel would be really appreciated. Happy to share some secrets on this end too re: CA side of the line :).

You can't launch until one hour before sunrise. If you want to fish then you need a boating and camping(?) permit and one permit for each angler for the number of days you will be fishing. You can get the permits at Crosby's or the ranger station on Sunday.

Happy to share some secrets on this end too re: CA side of the line :).Since Pelican is the main launch area, guess what kind of a lineup you will see there on opening day. And if the wind comes up the reverse will be true, and that lake can become a monster quickly. Use caution and judgement on weather conditions and good luck......Jetspray
