Sense Thanksgiving the weather on the East Side has not been kind. Snow, cold, wind and gray skies. Finally a fishing day arrives. Bright sun, seasionally warm with little wind. Time for a run to ICR. The dirt road up from Diamond Valley was snowey in spots but was little problem. We arrived at the lake, saw no other fishermen and found the lake completely covered in ice. This is kind of early for ice up at ICR but it has been cold. We spent a little time skipping rocks and headed back home. See you in a couple of months ICR. Thanks for the rise Jeff.

+1 - that ringing is awesome. :-) Can you ice fish ICR?It hardly ever gets deep enough ice to do that, we also call it "Windian Creek" because of it's location on the eastern side of the Sierra's in sort of a bowl and when the wind comes it sometimes comes with a blast...Ö.Jetspray

Thanks for the heads up. Iíll tread carefully. :-) Will be spending some time in Nevada this winter, any recommendations for ice fishing from Carson City?

How thick was the ice on Caples and RED lakes. Was it coveted with snow.

I'd wait till after the first of the year on these lakes. In mid winter the ice can approach 12 inches on these lakes with occasional snow depths of 10 feet. It can be a bit extreme up there.

CCI agree with Richard on this, many folks turn up popsicles here during the winter due to conditions un-familiar with them, and with no knowledge or little of it. Venture out when you "know" the ice is there and had many days of freezing both during the day as well as the night. Get some good weather sites that target the area you are going to. Make sure you notify someone of where you are going and when you are to be back, it may be a matter of life and death. Carry emergency gear and an extra set of warm clothes in a bag in case you get wet too...Ö..Jetspray

Hwy. 88 from west of Silver Lake to the East side of Carson Pass is one of the snowiest area in California. Snow is measured in feet instead of inches.

Does anyone know if Red and Caples are completely frozen over right now? Was going to go up this weekend, but if they are not sure where else to go. If anyone has a recommendation on lakes or streams to fish around here, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Also, not to sound dumb, but what does ICR stand for?

Thank you!

Thank you!All the lakes up here are frozen except for Lake Tahoe. So bring an ice auger or fish the big lake which is fishing good right now.
