So i was planning to go out for rockfish for the first time and was wondering if i should buy new gear or if i can use a shimano 9' salmon steelhead rod paired with a lexa 300?

Going on a charter

Any advise

Buy new equipment. That rod is too long and soft for a rockfish charter though the reel can be used. Rockfish doesnít open until July so you have time to shop around.

Agreed. That species makes the long trips worth it for me. Iím not to sure Iíll be rockfishing very much this year.

HAHAHA No worries, however I do see the 1 Ling limit which SUCKS!!! Pretty soon there wont even be a reason to buy a license.

When Im on my personal boat, I love using my 9'6" salmon/steelhead rod with an abu garcia c3-5500 reel. Makes for a really fun battle with a big ling. That being said, I wouldnt use it on a charter. You want something more stout to avoid tangles with other anglers. I like using a Abu garcia Veritas 2.0 in extra heavy with the same reel on boats with more than 2-4 people, just gives a little more backbone. And it shouldnt break the bank, when i bought my 3 they were about 99.99 each.

All depends on your budget. I found a killer deal at Denios swap meet in Roseville. Picked up a barely used 7' one piece Ugly Stick Tiger rod paired with a Penn 320GTi level wind for $80.00
