Hello All,

Made our yearly Trout fishing trip up to the Burney Falls Area. While up here normally stay in these PGE cabins located above Lake Britton. Been coming up here for over 30 years, and each year I cannot wait to spend quality time fishing and chatting with my father, uncle and cousins.

We fished 5 days out at Big Lake, out of McCarthur (Past Fall River Mills Ca). Its beautiful lake where parts of it are spring fed, and water is crystal clear. On good days (Like every day we went) you can see Mt Shasta. This lake your only allowed to keep 2 trout versus other lake for trout you can keep 5. We are fine with that, as the trout and area is beautiful.

We got limits of fish 4 of the 5 days we fished. The one days we didn't get limits, we still got 4 nice trout. We got a couple nice fighting large mouth bass that we got trolling, but released. We could have gotten limits but we were tossing back some smaller trout.

Largest trout of the trip were two beautiful trout that was at 19" and 20" both caught trolling red and gold spoons with Garlic scent. The 20" trout i caught initially hit hard, and peeled out line, but then just smam at the boat like it gave up without a fight. Only to get near the boat and all hell broke loose.

We brought home 26 rainbows, all with pink salmon colored meat. One of the best trip I have ever gone on in all these years. Cant wait to get back next year.

Will upload photos soon.

My dad and my cousin always like to hit up Baum Lake. I have never done that well there but my dad and my cousin always seemed to get fish there. This is my cousin who caught this beauty on a fly and bubble combo.

Never have had the chance to fish that lake, but it's on my someday list.

Sounds like you had a great trip. Annual trips with family and friends are the best. Nicely done.

Thanks for the report.

Looks like a nice trip. Remember though you can only have 10 trout in your possession at a time. This is something that's starting to become a bigger issue and is being enforced at a higher rate than in the past. Just some food for thought

I always want to make sure i am doing the right thing. I guess I was only looking at the daily limit which the body of water we fish is two. From what I just read it looks like the possession for this area might also be 2.

So I have a question. How am I to handle this scenario in the future. Lets say I am on a 5 day fishing trip. If I get my limit on day 1 and am not planing on eating the fish that day so I will be freezing them, and then on day 2 I get my limit of 2 fish, If I keep those 2 fish I will technically be in violation correct? Because I can only possess two fish?

Am I way off base on this

So I have a lot a friends and co workers that love it when i bring fish back. So If i catch anything up to my daily limit and take back and freeze the catch, and bring everything home at the end of my trip. I guess i/we have been doing things wrong.

Please advise

Lake Britton and Big Lake aren't listed in the regs. under waters with special fishing regs. Where did you find the limit numbers?

Burney Creek is listed with 2 fish limit and says nothing about a possession limit.

Under the (b)Sierra District - page 30 sub section 5. Big Lake (Hoor Pond) is within the Fall River Valley,

"(5) All streams, lakes and reservoirs in the Fall River Valley above the Pit No. 1 PG&E Diversion Dam on Fall River in Shasta County, except those listed by name in the Special Regulations.

Open Season and Special Regulations = Last Saturday in Apr. through Nov. 15.

Daily Bag and Possession Limit = 2 Trout

Thanks....

I don't know what to think about the 2 trout limit. It doesn't mention a daily bag and a possession limit. Just two trout....pretty vague. I wonder why?

I think it means 2 trout per hour.....LOL just kidding

I just called and the 2 trout means in your possession including home. Once you catch 2 trout you are done fishing unless you give them away or eat them. I told her I was going to be there 5 days and she said if I catch 2 trout on the 1st day and keep them I can't catch any more as long as I have those 2 trout. 530-225 - 2300

:like:

This makes sense and is what I would go by. The trout up there are wild and not stocked, from what I understand.
