Bass fishing has been slow for me the last coule of days, so I decided to do some evening kitty huntin. Within 10 minutes my bro Eric got slammed but was busy settin up a bass rig and could'nt set the hook. I quickly rebaited and threw my line out. 20 seconds later...WHAM!Pulled in this very pretty 16.5 pounder for my new PB.C&R. Ya, I'm stoked!

I caught it at on of my favorite ponds which is about 3 acres. I used a bacon and ham combo. They wanted nothing to do with the bacon, and kept stealing my ham. I might also add that the ham had been in the fridge for a little to long, so i figured the cats would love it.

Thanks Diego. I release all my fish(except koke of course). I was wondering how a catfish this size would taste? Not that I would want try it, just always heard big cats have sub-par quality meat...

I have yet to get one that big, but I like to keep the same rule of thumb for cats that I do stripers.Anything over 10#'s goes back. The bigger fish seem to taste not as good and the meat is a bit "sloppy" for lack of a better word.Nice catch!!!!!congrats! ;D

June 29, 2005—A fish to validate even the tallest fishing whopper was wrestled out of a river in northern Thailand a month ago. The 646-pound (293-kilogram) Mekong giant catfish measured nearly nine feet (2.7 meters) long—thought to be the largest freshwater fish on record.

Scientist Zeb Hogan, who is on a National Geographic-sponsored expedition to study the great freshwater fishes of the world, said he scoured Thai and other records but could not find any fish that weighed more than this one. "If there are reliable records of larger freshwater fish, I'd like to know about them," he said.

The Thai fishers who caught the giant catfish struggled for more than an hour to land the behemoth. At first it was hoped the male fish could be returned to the river to continue its spawning migration. But the fish died and ended up feeding almost an entire village. (View a photo of villagers butchering the fish.)

"I'm convinced that there are even larger living freshwater fish, even catfish," Hogan said. "I think the giant freshwater stingray is probably the biggest of the freshwater fishes. I've heard stories that they can weigh 500 kilograms [1,100 pounds] or more, and I believe them." (View a photo of a giant freshwater stingray.)

The giant catfish caught in Thailand needs to be put in context, Hogan said. "These giant fish are uniformly poorly studied and some are critically endangered. Some, like the Mekong giant catfish, face extinction. My study of giant freshwater fish is showing a clear and global pattern: the largest fish species are disappearing. The challenge is clear—we must find methods to protect these species and their habitats."

Might be old news to some, new to me. Saw some huge cats in Thailand when I went up a river on a tourist gig in 99'. Best part of this story is how the cat fed the whole villiage. I hope to break this record soon... [smiley=stirthepot.gif]

I got this one Sunday at Sugar Cut in Tracy! I was alone and did'nt have a scale, but I am guessing it went about 12 pounds! Was released unharmed! I caught it on "Wicked Stiky" dip bait! I also caught 7 others 2 to 4 pounds!
