Fished sutter bypass last week. In three trips I caught three 10#, three 6# one 13# and I did not count the 3 to 5 pounders, at least 10 of those.

Thats a good report thanks. What brings you up this way? Have you relocated? You were in Fresno weren`t you?

Digger, *born and raised in Yuba City lived there 42 years. So I still sneak home and fish when I can and see family. I pastor a small church in Orange Cove, A little town So. East of Fresno. If I ever do relocate orders will *have to come from above.

There are some big cats out at sutter. Ive never personally fished it but one of the wardens up there is a good family friend. He was telling me he checked a guy one day with twin 20#!!!!! I fish butte creek. Its the boundry of the west side of our duck club so i just use livers and hearts for bait when im cleaning ducks. Works like a charm!

Sounds like a great trip! When did you fish? Day or night? Bait? Closer to Sacramento Ave bridge or closer to 113? Last time I was out I fished next to 113 and the biggest fish of the night was a 2 pound carp on night crawlers.

Any place will do, fished daytime, Duck guts, no weight, under the drifts.

Vini, duck guts, chicken or pheasant will work. The best catfish bait you ever used. Just put a gob on a 2/0 or 3/0 hook and wrap it with thread. I usually fish it with no weight. Mendota is alot like the Sutter Bypass. I have thought about trying it out there. Believe me it works!
Must be the other barber, mine drives a new SUV.

Thanks for the info, but what do you mean by "under the drifts?"

I call them drifts. Some people call them log jams. A down tree in the water will have leaves and garbage floated against it. Cats like to hold up underneath. I have pulled big fish out of some only a few feet wide.

Ahhh, cool. I've always called those wonderful little piles of stuff "snags." So you are the "stick and move" type when you catfish? I'm the "sit and drink" type ;) ;D

Thanks again for the info!

Same with me. haha and im with appleinorange on duck guts work wonders!!! haha you have to shoot ducks first. Hearts and livers are the ticket!! Also try cut macrell in the bypass.

M_R if you dont have a boat try to find a bridge and fish the flooded end even if you fish right in the road. This time of year fish the flood water not the channel.

Really? would fish get out of the channel and feed in flooded areas?

Fished it that way for 30+ years and caught hundreds of catfish. We use to pray the bypass would flood. We use go out and take a lawn chair and get in a field at the edge of the water and back up as it rose. The fish love to feed in that leading edge as in covers new ground. Dont worry about the depth, I have caught them in 1 ft. of water. The catfish have a chance to get out of the chanel and have a 50 mile long buffet.

Can't wait for March. That's when, for me, the bypass really starts to produce :)

I bet with it being flooded like it is crawdads would work very well. You may even catch a bass or two. Cats like crawdads. They are probably feasting on em with the flood! Just a thought....

i live in meridian right across the street from the bypass best baits ive found are when flooded use feild mice caught many huge catfish with them but there really hard to find. and tomato worms ( green cadipilar looking things found on tomato plants) work really good if you want none stop action but catch alot of small ones. and i was thinking maybe u can get mice at a pet store they might work.
