Try mackeral. It doesn't come off of the hook as easy. Matches up really well with some homemade bait dip.

Where are you fishing at? When I go after cats in the Delta I mostly use clams. If you go back and read some of the posts you'll see alot of people also have some success with hotdogs.

Try sardine fillet. Clams don't seem to stay on the hook as good, but any of the things mentioned will work.

On the delta I have used sardines, nightcrawlers, chicken livers and maceral. all work just as well. JIM D.

OK guys... Tried hot dog Fri and not one nibble. Took it off and went back to liver. I prefer live bait like shad or minnows, liver, frozen shad, chovies and makeral. I also like to use either sonny's or Rusty's dip bait. I would prefer chovies to clams, unless the clams were nice large ones.

I like to use the clams the best. They seem to stay on the hook good and while I would prefer big ones, if I can get them, I just put on 2 small ones :P

I think anchovies are the best. Ive never used chovies or clams but heard of people catching them good on cut anchovies.

Clams are great, and I feel they are better than Anchovies, but I have had great luck for bigger cats on sardines.

Crawdads work great for larger cats also, use just the tail meat for smaller ones. JIM D.

How exactly do you hook clams?

wading2fish

most of the clam's body is soft, but on one edge there is tough muscle. I take my hook and impale first thru it's body and finally thru that muscle. The bigger the clam the bigger the muscle, so bigger clams work better for me, they have a bigger muscle edge and stay on the hook longer if hooked right.

You first have to take them out of the shell, scrape edge and pry open with edge of a knife. Then as wading2fish says JIM D.

Oh yeah,
Thanks Jimd, I forgot to mention that little detail. That is actually the hardest thing about using clams is getting them out of the shell. Some of em open up easy enough but then you run into some real stubborn ones that just don't want to become bait.

A lot of the time you can tell if there are catfish in an area by the clam shells all around. You can tell what people are using in an area most by what they leave behind. Really wish they would not do that though. JIM D.
