hi, I always fish with a spinning reel, but am about to purchase a baitcasting reel soon, I have one I borrowed from a friend and was wondering how you set the drag on it for when your fighting a fish so it can take out line if it has to. any info will be greatly appreciated, thank you.

i put my drag very tight and fish still take line,so i also use my thumb and the spool when fighting fish.BUT BEWARE, i've lost alot of big fish cuz i had my thumb on the spool. basicly it's your own prefrence, do you like to play the fish or horse the fish. and it also depends on the line test.light line=loose;heavy line=tight ;D

To set the drag: #1 to 70% of breaking point. *#2 Set it tight to where the line runs off smooth, just before it starts to "jerk". * * * *For less backlashes: *put a lure (or weight) on, then hit the fee spool . *When the lure slides down to the floor , and the spool stops or does not "overrun" causing a mess; you got it 95% right.
With practice your thumb will be the "overrun" adjustment; with only 30% friction set, for max. distance. *Good Luck....Practice..practice...practice.... PS light weight lures are HARD to use with a levelwind !
