pulled in with 2 keepers and 3 uc davis bioligy students were at the vista dock and shared with us there tracking data.we learned some things thought id share because i had some miss conceptions as well.firstly they catch white/green sturgeon and plant tracking devices in them to moniter travel.white sturgeon DO NOT go to ocean and return to spawn they remain local year round and follow river system when time to spawn.green sturgeon go to sea and follow routes to the columbian river and return to spawn.for years i thought it was the other way around.also white sturgeon are not solitary fish females keep 2 or 3 males with them all the time.... thought id share..

Hi all,

Many white sturgeon go to the ocean, but it seems green sturgeon do much more of that. We have clear evidence of this from decades worth of conventional tag recoveries.

Here is a link to a paper about the movement of one white sturgeon from the Klamath River to the Fraser River (BC):

Thanks

do the UC davis people and the DFG work together and share findings?

guess not ;D

so that explains double hookups!

I am glad they are doing this. Blue tuna for years have been tagged and equiped with gps locators. There have been sites in the past where you could track their daily movements. Wish they would do that with sturgeon. I could throw away my fish finder and switch to a lap top! *

I've been studying about biologists and their Tarpon tracking using satellite technology. $6,000 a tracking unit but they have learned a lot about the fish migrations using these units.
