Well, it's 0210 and I have not received any updates from the filipino mafia and Nor Cal Bangers. They're in Pacifica. It could mean only two things:
1. They have not caught anything :-[
or
2. It's so hot they don't have time to talk ;D

I'm guessing #1 but I'll wait until later this morning for an update.

Just got back...Yesterday I hooked up with the Nor Cal Bangers and the Mafia, got on the water at 5:00 PM I got one small shaker on a 1 oz. Kastmaster with white buck tail, then at 7:30 PM went and fished Rockaway Beach till 3:30 AM went back to Pacifica Beach, at daybreak a small run started, out of Twenty five guys 10 fish landed nothing over 15 lb.if you go you wont need a big surf rig an 8'6 MH rod with 12 lb. line with a shock leader will work fine everyone was using *a Hair Raiser 3/4 to 1 oz. white with a green tail, all the fish are close to shore, maybe thirty feet in front of you. *;)

Adding to Double d'S Report: Pacifica beach have been doing pretty good the last two weeks, Last thursday 24 fish was caught , Saturday 15 Sunday 10. Use hair Raisers 1/2 to 5/8 oz. with rubber worm tail ,white or chart. This is actually very good considering it's only April and it gets better. Just a reminder wear wading belts with waders ,Pacifica surf have a strong under tow. Safety Guys. Go get 'em. Luckily all of the accidents are not fisherman. We hear enough voices fishing at night. HAHAHA

Double_D

the Godfather forgot to say he went into the surf this weekend, no harm, wading belt and a high calorie enhanced stomach helped keep water out of his waders. ;D

Fishing One..People have luck bait fishing you mite try the Pier, as far as tackle goes right now you don't need the heavy surf gear, this weekend I used 8'6 MH rod with a bait caster reel 12 lb. line 25 lb. leader(2 feet) hair raiser white with chartreuse worm tail (3/4 to 1 oz.) I like to go a little heavy on my lures, right now all the Stripe Bass are real close to shore.

Fishing One ...I forgot to say, as for your retrieve it does not mater, just get it in front of them.

Just got home from playing GOLF ;). No hook-ups for me today :'( but it felt good to be pluggin at the beach again. Fished for about 3 hours for nada. Saw at least 6 stripers caught, all about 7 to 10 lbs. I was told that a 15lber was caught around the crack of dawn. Light gear set ups. Must have been at least 25 guy's fishing. Gee if you don't know where to fish just look for a bunch of plugger's standing around a hole!!!

Hey godFATHER what happened did one of those rogue waves get yah? Good to hear it didn't suck you in. Be careful out there!

Now that's what I'm talking about!!! Nothing better then catching a striper on a POPPER!!! There is nothing that can describe a strike on a surface lure, just seeing that monster grab that lure and having the discipline to wait for him to turn and take it is just the best kind of surf fishing there is.

THE SURF FISHERMAN: These guys are a different breed of fishermen that live's for the season to come. All year around they would stare at there rods and reels in the garage,to make sure every thing is in proper condition. Check there lure bags just to see if the hooks are sharp and have enough for the season. From day one they would contact each other to see if any thing is being caught or if there are any kind of changes. Surf fisherman doesn't care how old you are or your raise. But the only thing they really care about, are the Stripers plentiful and big. They'll go through any thing just to catch the stripe fish, they'll climb down hills that some times take fifteen to half an hour to reach. They will spend hours on stand by waiting for the runs. Every year the amount of fisherman grows and i saw generation of fisherman teach there kids to continue the tradition that's been going on. You may call them crazy , but the feel of hooking up your first fish of the season is the anxiety that you've been waiting for the whole year. But the real best thing is now we are all one family.

Hey ghostfish , instead of using a bigger reel why don't you use the power pro and just lock the drag, that will stop the fish from running.. JK

Power pro can used on spinning reels but they recommend a certain proceedure for optimal line performance. This is takem from their web site.

Fish with Spinning Reels

For optimal PowerPro performance on your spinning reel, we recommend closing the bail manually. While your bait is falling, pull on the line to make sure it is seated firmly on the reel, then begin your retrieve.

For line test rating, I would use 50# which is equivalent to 12# mono.

I have seen people catching stripers at the beach next to the pier in Pacifica, while I was catching salmon off of the pier. Now, I want to try it out. Based on the previous posts it looks like the time is right. I need some info? Where should I go? What lure / bait should I use? Is there any special technique? What would be good to bring along. Im suspecting warm warm warm clothes. Do I need waders ? Will I be in the water casting or can I do it from the shore? Please advise.

Thanks in advance,

I will try to join you guys if I am able to get out in the morning. I have prior plans at noon in stockton.

About using powerpro w/ spinning reels, I experienced repeated line twists while surf fishing Monday. Might have to do with the bail thing that Dimpala95 posted about. It is the first time I exprienced it ever since I started using powerpro at the beginning of the year.

hair raiser white with white buck tail and green worm any size 1 oz. and under, wader's yes! but some guy's don't use them, weather can very lately we have been fishing at Mori's if you are at the pier just look south about one mile, just look for all the people fishing.

Thanks DD,
OK, so I have a similar rod and reel setup with 20 lb braided line. The lure may be a little hard for me to get.
I need a picture of a hair raiser you are describing.
I looked at the pictures in the previous posts and see a red and white big lure, what is that called and what other bait/lure should I use?

One mile south would probablly put me near the end of the beach where the rocks are, is this the correct place.

Thanks,

In regards to using braided line for surf fishing. It is a very strong line with the advantages of a small diameter but fishing conditions in an all out blitz sometimes comes with a high crosswind, heavy surf with a sidewash and 250 people jogging for position shoulder to shoulder thus causing frequent line crossings. Other fishermen will not take kindly to the fact that their freshly spooled reel with monofilament line is being scuffed up with braidedline not to mention it is very difficult to undo tangles. Just posted this so everyone can have a good time in a great day of fishing. Goodluck to all and Tight Mono Lines!!!

I might be better off using mono for now until I become more proficient at surf fishing.

1 oz. kastmaster with white buck tail will work. And you just figured out where to go, hope we see you tomorrow. :)

Freddie and I were the last mohicans on the beach, we left at 2100. I got home and weighed my fish, 11.82lbs. Not too shabby. It hit like a ton of bricks. There were about 13 fish total for the day. Very slow but it's still early remember guys. As Double D already stated, the fish were mostly in the 10-15# category but there were a couple that were about 8#. There were at least 35 guys fishing at one time but no problems, great company. The Filipino Mafia was well represented as was NCB. It was a great day, sunny, very light breeze and the water was perfect.

I think the Filipino Mafia is planning another early morning op tomorrow. As of right now, I can't make it. :-[ Double D is supposed to send me the pictures to host for him so you'll have to wait for them. Nice to have met Hookie and the NCB gang, hopefully we'll fish together again.

Hey guy's...I'm looking at the pictures I took yesterday,
man I need to learn how to post, I have a pic of a water spout that was maybe 10 miles out from where we were fishing, I have a pic of a father and son hooking up at the same time, I have Freddie and Dimpala with fish and hookie talking with the Godfather and a shot of the line up on the surf at Mori's. As far as fish counts it was not as good as Tuesday but enough to keep me there for 17 hours. I also heard that people were at Ocean Beach catching fish, I don't have numbers, at lunch time we drove by RV's and saw a lot of guys fishing, once again guys the run has not started but the fish counts are good, just wait till it starts by that time I'll have this pic posting thing figured out, and we would like to have any of you fish sniffer come out and fish with us if you think you mite want to try surf fishing for Striper's, h00kie showed up and he is already dialed in for surf fishing, the NorCal Banger have been with us fishing for two weeks now them guys fish 24/7, one of them forgot his waders, but no big deal he stood in the 58 degree water up to his cluster and fished till it got dark, then most normal people would go home they stopped off at some pier
in San Francisco and fished for sharks. Anyway the Mafia still has people fishing if they call I will post and later today I'll get the photo's posted, I'm out.

Mr Matt, definitely bring your waders. Even on a warm day standing in that cold water for extended periods can be brutal. If you don't have any get soem that are light weight. It will pay off on the beaches as there are times when you've got to do some seious walking and climbing.

I always pack as light as I can. No use carrying and bunch of crap only to have to lug it back to the car. It's even worst if you get fish.

I got the Daiwa Emcast with a 10ft rod.

Double_D
05-09-2005, 07:32 PM
That works, you will get it just as things start to happen,
do you have lighter gear like an 8'6 rod spinning or bait caster?

gmdcdvm
05-09-2005, 07:35 PM
Unfortunately no. I was thinking of odering the 8ft6" rod and slightly small reel that they have in that series. I wasn't sure exactly what size gear to get so I went for the middle of the road. As I mentioned before I am new to all this so I am more than willing to go with your recommendation. Since its backorderd I can call up and change the order (price remains the same). Let me know what you think.

Double_D
05-09-2005, 08:03 PM
The reason I ask is that right you don't need heavy gear all the fish are close to shore may be 15 yards, right now I am using an 8'6 NH rod, my 9'ft rod and reel are back order also and it is still to early to use the 11' ft rod and reel.

Double_D

Dimpala has the pics when he get's home he will post them.

gmdcdvm
05-09-2005, 08:20 PM
Well, I figure I'm new to all this. I'll start with the 10ft outfit, and maybe I'll pick up a lighter outfit in the future.
The good part is the reel comes with an extra spool. I was thinking up spooling them up with 8 or 10lb line, and 15lbs line. What do you think?

Double_D
05-09-2005, 08:36 PM
15 lb. works..I use 15lb on the 9ft and 11ft with a 25lb shock leader, another thing, shock leader,Godfather likes to tie them together with a swivel. I don't and the same with Dimpala we use an albright knot to tie the two lines together, because when I cast I like six in. of line between my rod tip and the lure.Godfather cast with 2ft. of line between lure and rod tip.

gmdcdvm
05-09-2005, 08:38 PM
What is a shock leader?

dimpala95
05-09-2005, 08:38 PM
I would go with a 9' surf rod with med or fast action. Depending on your skill and if you want to do night fishing determines if you should go spinnning or casting. I prefer casting but it's hard to do it at night therefore I use spinning for night. Line test I recommend is at least 12# but prefer 15#. Remember to use a shock leader.

Double_D
05-09-2005, 08:40 PM
EL Jefe...I have been using my 8'6 with 12 lb.line and nothing over 1 oz. lure, and if I get a monster and he snaps my pole...COOL...I would have let it go anyway. :)

dimpala95
05-09-2005, 08:41 PM
Technically a shock leader is a leader that takes up the energy of your cast. It is heavier line then your main line and should extend from your lure through your rod and a couple turns on your reel. So, when you cast you are basically casting with the heavier line until the main line gets pulled out.

Double_D
05-09-2005, 08:46 PM
It does two things, the heavy line so you ain't snapping line when you cast them heavy lurer's, and when you get a fish you have to time it, when you are reeling in a fish you let the wave wash it up on shore then you grab the leader and drag that beast up and away from the water or the next wave. :D

Double_D

I have 20 and 25lb mono at home. I ordered some 15lb at the same time I placed my rod order. Thanks again for all the great advice.

I plan on doing some fishing at Ocean Beach and Pacifica by the end of May when I get my rod/reel. Maybe I'll finally be able to meet some of you then. Like I said I'll be the tall guy, with the goat, and likely bald by that time of the year. Once I get my stuff in I'll ask about terminal tackle recommendations.

Not to scare people but night surf fishing can be pretty dangerous. Go with somebody. I would suggest you get your feet wet during the day to see how to fish the surf. Once you get it down and you feel at ease then move on to night fishing.

Thanks for the offer, and I will definitely be taking you up on it. Once I get the set up I'll ask for a list of recommended lures, etc. Then, I will be ready to go.

I have tons of week days off (i work 10-11 days a month which usually includes 2-3 weekends) so any time I'm not working I'm down to go out.

Hope to meet some of you soon in the near futures, and thanks once again.

Don't buy neoprene wader's, get light wight breathable.

dimpala95

Yep, the light weight breathable ones are definitely worth their money. Go for a boot foot if you can. No need for a felt sole on the sand.

or u could go just like Zack (ncb) and wear shorts and rubber boots in the middle of 57 degree water and never complain one bit....or maybe he just thinks he's a tough guy...HE-HE....no really he is a die hard.

be good, we have people fishing to day so I'll get some report's and post them..This is what I like about surf fishing for Striper's, it is the most unselfish type of fishing there is, and there are so many fish and there is no one hot spot, the beach is fifteen miles long.

Great shots of striper hunting in the surf. Nothing like hooking into a nice fish from the beach. Fishkiller...A motor home would be perfect, but you won't be able to park it near the beach at night, I have seen people park at Safeway parking lot in Pacifica, you can't miss it as you come down hwy 1 and enter Pacifica it is on the right I would go with you but that thing is probably full of PILE WORMS. *:D

Fishkiller..When we do our night OPs we park at Rockaway Beach, north parking lot near the hotel, there is a sign that said you can't over night, but just leave you fishing license around you neck, don't make any noise and you will be OK, if a cop asks anything just tell him you are taking a brake and waiting for the tide to change, and they won't do anything, they know people fish all night there.

Double_D

Bassassin...Right now it's just hair raisers up to 1 oz and may be a Kastmaster 1 oz. with white buck tail, at night, top water plugs, shallow divers(Bombers)all on light rod and reel, them when the runs start it's 11ft. rod and 3 to 5 oz. metal(heavy)

Fishkiller, there is no real RV parking near the beach as all of the parking stalls are painted diagonally. Wait, I think the side of the street opposite from the golf course should accomodate an RV. I think the parking there is parallel with the street.

Used to be the same way at Mussell Rock, just checking the action below. To be honest, the runs are few and far between, do not believe they happen all the time. They do happen, but perhaps about once, twice or three times a month in July. Who knows? Only them stripers know! But, when it happens, it is the best that can ever happen to any fisherman! Hey All ,

I am new to the board here, and want to say you folks do a great job - I love the photos and tips for better fishing!

There were plenty of fisherman there last night, and one guy said he had "snagged" a big one, two nights ago...

i had that same kind of stuff happen also dd.people getting mad because new people showing up at their secret spot.or just a random person reads the posts and makes a big deal out of it.then targets you..well i have news its not their spot.its public.fishing is for everybody.there are alot of people fishing these days.what i do care about is that it will take a whole state of fishermen to stand up and change the problems going on with our fishery within our state.the more people educated on the problems and out fishing the better in the long run.even if i do have to watch other people catch fish its ok.what if it's their first fish and they are stoked on it.i have caught enough and am always happy to see new anglers hooking up.

Went fishing after work today, hooked up with Dimpala, Mr.T , and h00kie. Great to finally put a face to the name ;D . Only fished for a couple of hours :'( , but was great to get out there again. Water had alot of junk!! There were about a dozen people out there, didn't see any hook up's. Dipmala got a nice one before I arrived. I guess it's fish taco's again ;) ;D ;) !!!
No need to tell where we were at, just look at the picture's and you could figure it out 8) 8) 8) .
