View Full Version : Crappie on the yak

!0 year old step son is down visiting from Montana, so I took him fishing with me today. *I paddled him across to a good spot, and had him set up for bluegill and bass. *I went and drifted minnows. *I had a lot of shaker stripers, and ran out of minnows. *I came back to Ryan, and he had a small LM bass that he was unhooking, and then he got a BG on the bobber. *He asked if he could take out the kayak. *I reluctantly let him, there were no boats buzzing around, so I told him to cruise just the dock area, and went over safety items if he flips it. *He takes off, trolling little rapalas, and comes back with a stringer full of crappie! Little man had his groove on! *We loaded back up our stuff, and we started paddling to the truck, and I left the little rapalas out the back about 50 feet, with drag on like 0. *I hear line peeling off one, and look, the rod is doubled over. *I grab it, set the drag, and hand it off to him, and tell him it is a striper. *I reel in the other rod, and he gets this fish in, and it was a shaker, but almost legal. *Put up a good fight for the little guy. *We load all the gear in the truck, and start driving, looking ahead in the water is a boil like I have never seen! Stripers were knocking shad out of the water 10 feet. It was insane. *I threw the truck in park, grabbed a rod, put a broken back on, and casted, diaper striper, got him off, the boil moved out of range, so I started wading out to my arm pits, Cast, and the plug was hit the second it hit the water. *That one was just under legal too. *The boil moved further out, and I threw a few more casts, but no more fish.
Moral of the story, step son caught a crappie before I did. *He did it on his first time on the yak, and handled it like a pro. *He wants a yak now! *I am so proud of him, best day of fishing I have had in years. *If the size of the picture is not right, can someone resize it for me please? *Thanks,
