What do you do with the roe???
If you eat it as caviar, is there any special prep?

Still asking what you guys do with the roe???

Sorry crowbar, we aren't having a discussion on Sturgeon Roe. The Sniffer would prefer to see all Sturgeon with roe released and to that end, we will not condone the taking of Sturgeon for roe or the discussion of how to process it. You will have to do a web search if that is the information you seek. The Sniffer tries to be proactive when it comes to preserving our dwindling fishing resources. I hope you understand.

I agree but I don't think it is as much a factor now as long as people follow the new regs and only keep their 3 fish. Still, that's ten pounds of eggs that won't hatch :-[

I never have, and never will take a sturgeon with roe. Of the over 1 dozen legal sturgeon brought on my boat last year, I kept 2 that were 6 months apart. The reason I was asking was because early in this thread, the subject of roe came up and a forum member was happy about 10 pounds of roe.

I was just wondering if there is a market for the stuff, and if so, how do the buyers control the age and handling of the stuff.

I am however, VERY happy to see that the sniffer has a hard-line stance against this practice!!!! Keep up the good work.

Well I think that it is great that most all of us practice catch and release, especially fat roe bearing females. How ever it is the right of the individual law abiding fisherman to keep 3 fish within the "slot" each year, if that fish that the fisherman keeps happens to have 10 pounds of roe, it seems like it would be fine for someone to inform him on how to prepair and consume the roe instead of him just throwing it away with the skin and guts. I was told by a fellow coworker that he threw away a 5 gallon bucket of roe because he didn't know what to do with it and he could find no one to inform him on how to take care of it! The philisophy that we should preach, should be on not wasting any of those edible parts, on those times that any of us decide to keep a sturgeon for food. Sorry I dont really want to get an argument started, just voicing my opinion..............rick

I'm new to sturgeon and have landed just one (it was over sized and immediately released). Just wondering, is it easy to determine if the fish is full of roe?

I agree the the sniffers approach...just looking for some education in the event that I hook one with roe.

The ones with roe tend to have a bulge near their midsection. If you look at it from the top, you should be able to see the bulge better.

The whole point Metal Mouth was pushing is to release those females, regardless if they are in the slot or not. Look at our salmon run last year, and the striper numbers lately. We need to do everything we can to help along our game fish numbers. That includes releasing big fat spawning females of certain species.
