I've caught Catfish, LM Bass, Stripers,Trout, Carp, ..... Etc. using a fly. I think it would be a real kick to catch a sturgeon on a fly don't you?? ;-)

Tried to fish for them with a lite steelhead rod and 4 lb. line , real tough to get a good hook set . Was looking to set some kind of record , after loosing a few I gave that idea up .

Decent size pike , bet he fought well on the fly rod . Caught one trolling for kokanee at IVR this summer that went just over 30" , no idea on the weight . Thought I had a real jumbo kokanee , oh, well !

A sturgeon on a fly rod ??? Maybe... you better have a boat ready to chase it.

Dave Vedder did it on a dare about 8-10 years ago, he wrote a story about it in STS. Trippy for sure. His opinion? Fun once, never again. :o

trying to cast a weighty bait around sounds like a challenge, just getting the bait to them would be 3 days of trial and error

I Caught a 59" on a flyrod (if you can call it that? had a mitchell 300 on it.) We were fishing the mothballs took me and 2 others just under 2 hrs to fight it in. not having a rod but to hold makes it fun!!!!!

If you have Keith Fraser's little sturgon fishing book, there is a picture in it of underwater photographer Al Giddings Jr. with a 122 # sturgeon that he caught on a fly rod in the Hamilton Flats.

I don't think getting the bait to them would be a big deal... you just give it a lob and it doesn't need to go that far anyway.

Sounds like a challenge.

That's no squawfish, it's a pike. All those lakes down that direction have had been compromised with the things. Caught one last year catfishing at Del Valle, I thought I had caught some Striper/Kokanee cross til some dude told me what it was, threw it to the birds. Hope you didnt try to eat it Slim!!
