what's the best possible reel to have for fishing sturgeon? What's the difference when it says, 2, 3, 4, 5 ball bearings? What's good for sturgeon fishing. Thankyou and FISH ON

It means it has 2,3,4,5 ball bearings. Get a Shimano TR200 and fill it with 25lb test of your liking and go to town ;) Most likely, your comin from San Jose and well youll be fishing many spots. Do some more reading. You might even try a search here on the boards for much more info. Alot of these topics have been covered several times ;)

Enjoy your stay :D

Boat or Bank Fishing? Convetional or Spinning is my Question? The bearing question, it's the amount of Ball Bearings used inside the reel. More Bearings= VERY SMOOTH operation.

JV take SS's advise and stick with the TR200 its a great reel at a good price and has drag for days.. its what I use and many of the other Sturgeon guys use them too.

I too have the Morrum 6600 and i highly think that it will be small for Sturg's. I would pick the Tekota 500 before i pick the Morrum. Don't get me wrong, i love the my Morrums. Best reel that Abu Garcia makes. ;D

Carlo,

Have you looked at the new Shimano Tyrnos? It comes in two sizes (TVR-20 and TVR-30)

Shimano TLD , usually use my 15 TLD but when I use a lighter pole I go to my 5 TLD , either one has more drag than you will ever need . Doubtfull you will find a smoother drag . Been playing with a Penn 545 lately , not bad . Have only caught fish on it up to around 100 lbs. , so the jury is still out on that one , need a fish about twice that size ( I WISH ! ) to know for sure .

You guys forgot the Shimano Charter Special. Either the TR1000LD or the TR2000LD. They retail for $119 and have a stronger drag than the TLD's plus they have a level wind.

I also like the Avet MXL or JX. They're about $150 but no level wind. They are heavier than the Shimanos since they are all aluminum instead of graphite.

Both of the reels I mentioned have great drags since they are lever drag reels. They will hold up to big fish which can abuse and overtax a star drag reel. You don't see too many star drag reels when you go big game fishing.

Iíve been running two of the TR 200s and one TR 2000 LDs on the boat for some time now and like both reels a lot. For the money at $60 I think the TR 200 is pretty hard to beat. If you want to spend the extra money though the extra power of the 2000 Leaver drag comes in really handy sometimes. Iíve yet to have to go off anchor and chase a fish with the 2000. Theyíre not quit as easy to cast as the 200s though.

I find casting a lever drag reel is as easy as any conventional reel. You just need an educated thumb.

It's not to say you couldn't get away with it. That's more of a striper reel. The drags are a bit small and would burn up pretty fast if you used it strickly for sturgeon.

50 or 80 pound power pro breaks easily,if snagged just pull back and it will break.try 80 pound fireline,lmao...now your in trouble.ive broken 80 pound steal wire leadline before the braid broke. 8)

i have 80 pound whiplash on my penn 965 international and it cast perfect.i have 30 pound fireline on my abu 6500 and that braid is a bit stiffer, but still cast's beautifully.casting with braid is fine, only down fall is latter in the year when were tossing 10-16 ounce weights from the bank the braid will snap just casting it.the only braid that ive used that can stand the force of whipping all that weight was the 80 pound fireline.but that line is WAY over kill!!it has a diameter of i think 40 pound line.and if you get snagged with that line your in deep crap.if your out at the bash ill show you this stuff it is unbelievable!youll get a laugh out of it when you see it.

I amazed at evryone who seems to be breaking barids. I use power pro and have never snapped it on a hook set or pulling on a snag. I use 80lb and am on at least the fouth spool on each of the two reels I use for sturgeon.

As a matter a fact I carry a small dowel to break off snags that I cannot get free. The only break off I've had was due to a backlash lockup. Anyway that's my experience useing power pro for the last couple of years.
