Hello all,

This year the National Marine Fisheries Service proposed listing green sturgeon in (what amounts to) the Sacramento-San Joaquin system as threatened with extinction. Their final decision has not been announced.

While NMFS' published rationale had some problems, green sturgeon here are certainly sparse. During our tagging studies we see upwards (sometimes much upwards) of 100 white sturgeon for each green sturgeon, and we know that white sturgeon are not particularly abundant. Josh Israel from UC Davis has some genetics information that suggests the number successful green sturgeon spawners each of the preceding couple of years has been under 20.

If green sturgeon down here are a distinctly important part of the total green sturgeon population and if they are as rare as they seem to be, then it'd be good to release them with as little harm as possible.

Thanks

Killer caught a 57" this year, and I caught a 59" last year both in the Pittburg area. Seems to be alot of smaller fish in that area right now too.
