Hello all,

Just a quick note to let you know that we have expanded the California Department of Fish and Game sturgeon population study to include a creel survey.

The purpose of this creel survey is to improve the precision of abundance estimates for anadromous legal-sized white sturgeon and to make first-ever abundance estimates for green sturgeon. The geographic scope of the estimates is limited to the Sacramento-San Joaquin system.

The Department has done abundance estimates for decades, using only data from a seasonal Department sturgeon-capture effort in San Pablo Bay. The information has been used in efforts to protect sturgeon habitat and to evaluate potential fishing regulations.

Precision of white sturgeon abundance estimates have been generally low and we've had too little data to calculate green sturgeon abundance.

By using both creel data and Department sturgeon-capture effort data, we expect increased precision for subsequent white sturgeon abundance estimates and hope to estimate green sturgeon abundance.

The creel clerks this season are the same folks who collect creel data for the striped bass population study, so you may have met them before. They will ask your permission to measure the length and determine the sex and species of landed sturgeon, as well as record information from any tag on the sturgeon.

Please contact me with questions or suggestions.

Thanks

Hows it going SB.

So what do we have to do when we land and keep or land and release. What info will we need to provide if we release fish.

Hi 2Q,

Like our striped bass creel survey, participation in the sturgeon survey is completely voluntary. If someone isn't interested is us working with their fish, they should just let the creel clerk know.

Also, I should have used the word "kept" instead of "landed". The creel clerks won't ask questions or collect information about fish you release.

Thanks for the chance to clarify.

hopefully it will be nice to hear the results...sturgeon look like a fun species to go after on a C&R and maybe a keep one in a few type basis. :)
