View Full Version : Question for Bodega fishermen

What month do the salmon come in close enough for the smaller boats? I have a 15' Arima Sea Hunter so I don't like to go out too far. Of course if the marine forecast is good, I can go out a few miles.

Thanks for the input.

The salmon come in with in a mile of the head in July. In fact we caught some just outside the head.

July and the first part of Aug. is the best. But you can find flat seas before then.
Last weekend we were there and it was flat as a lake....Go back and read the thread on Sunday's May 3rd report. I posted some pictures of what it was like...

Check the NOAA weather for cast. If it has 1-2 foot wind and 2-4 swells you should be fine to go...

Good luck...

in late july you can catch fish right by bodega rock and around the "jingle bell" and the estaros....and also the fish should show up around tamalas point in the next mounth or so!

when we had that bad el nino (did i spell that right?) people were catching the salmon off the jetty.

brian, wouldn't the el nino push the salmon out into deeper cooler water?

seems logical,, BUT there were some salmon caught off the jetty...

i cant find the proof i was looking for but it was about 98 when a few salmon were caught off the rocks
tired of looking for it
we do all agree that july the fish should be in close
although it seems that 3-4 miles is not thar far right now
we just need the bite to pick up
i still say riggers down 100'-150'

Thanks guys. Looks like July it is. I take it everyone will be mooching then? When does everyone switch to mooching? I can't stand the smell of my 2-stroke engine, so I like to avoid trolling if possible.

BTW, nice pictures Gone Fishin. If the water is flat like that, I can go out pretty far.

I agree Bob,

This year with the Rock fish opening up on July 1 this year during the red hot Salmon bite, this will be fun to mooch for both...That's only a couple of months away...Yahoo... ;D ;D I can see it now a 30 lb salmon and a 30 lb ling cod... ;D ;D

My two buddy and I where out last weedend in our 14' alum boat. A bit of a swell but we got salmon off the head and north to salmon creek in 240'to 300' of water.Went north to ride swell home when the wind came up. Pulled limits of rocks and one cabazone. The only bad part was going out between the head and the rock on the reef was alittle soupy but just take it slow you'll be fine. Good Luck.

Thanks Fish_School, and welcome to the boards. I'll make my way up there in the next few weeks. I may try for rockfish in HMB this weekend.

Corn, you could have been out there (weather-wise) yesterday & today, and it looks like tomorrow will be flat calm too. The fishing's definitely not the best right now, but the weather is as good as it gets. The fish haven't moved in close yet, but I was marking gobs and gobs of bait in 150-250' of water right off the head last night. so hopefully the fish will find it soon.

Sounds good Fishquest. I've been watching the water conditions and it does look good. Too bad the fish aren't in close (and in big numbers)... I like to mooch. Thanks for the response.
