What kind of fish can i target at Fort Baker. I plan on bringing crab traps there on monday, but i would also like to fish. i was just wondering what kind of fish are around this time of year and when should be the best time to fish

I'm assuming you'll be fishing on the pier... so...

Most likely you'll run into some stingrays, sand sharks, various perch (especially Shiner Perch), Smelt, maybe even a striper, and occasional lingcod...

If your fishing on the jetty...

Various rockfish (black, cabbies, etc), Monkey Face Eels, Lingcods, and all of the above....

Best time to fish are during tidal movements...

-At the pier your standard rigs with bait would work for most fish...
-Sabikis (make sure you only have 3 hooks) get the perch and also smelt... tip it with strips of squid or shrimp... or you can use whatever bottom rig you want and use shrimp...

At the jetty...
-Poke poleing is a popular method here... long rod (or something long enough), line, and hook (maybe a split shot) ... and some bait (squid)

* all you do is just drop the bait into spaces between rocks (in the water of course ;D)... kinda jig it around or so and see if there is a fish... If you get one.. you should try to get it out ASAP...

-Or you can use the rigs mentioned and cast it out

-Or you can cast out fish traps with 1/2+ oz jigheads

yeah i planned on fishing on the pier, i did not know that you can fish on the jetty. Are there any signs posted?

I assuming you're talking about NO FISHING signs on the jetty correct? if so then no there are no signs posted that you can not fish on the jetty last time I checked.... It's just quiet a bit of walk...

-Sabikis (make sure you only have 3 hooks)

What is the deal with that. I have never heard only 3 hooks before?

ok im leaving tonight after work. ill let you guys know whats happening out there

09-23-2008, 01:13 PM
ok nothing happening except lots of crabs and a few shiner perch

09-23-2008, 01:55 PM
Should of rig one of those shiners up and tossed it out...

Thats what I have gotten into there. It seems the crabs take off any bait before the fish get to it.

09-23-2008, 07:34 PM
yeah i tried using the shiners for bait, but no luck. The first one i had on was soaking for about 20 mins before i checked on it and when in reeled it in, it was mangled by crabs

NExt time give the jetty a try for some rock fish and perch... maybe even some monkey face eel...

09-24-2008, 08:41 AM
Yeah the jetty looked pretty fishy. I seen one guy working the outside corner throwing some type of lure for no luck. Are there kelp beds along the inside or outside of the jetty?

09-24-2008, 02:00 PM
if the crabs are that bad why not use a hi-lo to keep the bait out of their reach? or make a modified hi-med.. haha

09-24-2008, 08:37 PM
Do bottom feeders like leopards and rays go for the bait if it is off of the bottom?

09-25-2008, 06:48 AM
The leopards = yes ....

Rays = Yes (but it's best on the bottom..)

I'm not sure if there is a kelp bed at the jetty... I don't think kelp grows inside the bay.....

09-25-2008, 08:10 PM
i was under the impression that the bait has to be on the bottom for rays and sharks. ill have to keep that hi-lo rig in mind next time the crabs are tearing my bait up

I was thinking the same thing. Then Panfish Popper brought it up. I think I mentioned it in our report. We started having fun catching the bait fish and crabs so I didn't change the setup. Next time a high-lo.

Are you able to stay there over night like berkeley pier, or do you have to leave at a certain time?
