I'm going to go down to the beach's around Pacifica and try for some surf perch. If I get into some nice ones I might take a few home for dinner. Is there any ones that I can't keep this time of year. I always thought you could keep any surf perch at any time but I seen some guys in the bay catching tuns of huge ones and they said it was just for practice because the season didn't open for 2 days. :-?
Just don't want to worry about getting caught with some perch in my Ice chest that I should not have.

Thanks for the info. Im not worried about the limit to much because I would not be keeping many. I just thought there might be some that were protected or something that I did not know about.
I figured it was OK but just wanted to check before going. Now all I have to do is catch some ;D

Minimum size for redtail surfperch is 10.5 inches. I have caught redtails in Pacifica. No other size limits. Go get 'em! Oh yeah, and it's 10 per species and 20 total.

I looked them up on DFG site and this is how they recommend fishing for them.

For surf fishing, 20 pound test line and 6 to 80 ounce sinkers are usually used with sand crabs, tube worms or clams for bait.

I don't think I have any 80 oz sinkers and that might be hard to cast into the surf with my rod :o ;D ;D

Pacifica pier may be the place to try your sabiki experiment.
Walk out until you are over the surf and start jigging. The rig would be more vertical than horizontal and less likely to tangle. ;)

Yea, I can catch them off the pier but I want them off the surf. I went perch fishing today and ended up mostly fishing for striper's. I used some sand worm but the only color I could find was new penny. Tried shrimp and Panfish popper tried motor oil grubs. He got one. I didn't. We might go hit it again tomorrow to try and add to the one. There was way to much seaweed to try a sabiki rig.

Some sabiki rigs I got for the trip

Some California Least Turns that my daughter did a report on and are supposed to be endangered but I see them everywhere lately.

Regarding the DFG advice: "For surf fishing, 20 pound test line."

I don't like to use anything more than 10-pound test, but then again, I use a graphite spinning rod, rather than one of those huge long rods.

same with me 10lb line is good enough no point in having big line for such small fishes i even use 10lb line to fish halibut and rays ahah

other than standing on the sand its the same surf. *;D

Yea but I want to be able to catch them when I go out for striper's and there are none in the area. I can catch some perch and wait to see signs of striper's. I also can take my daughter to the beach and maybe get in a few casts while she plays. She wont be happy If I tell her we are going to the pier but might be OK with it if I say we are going to the beach. ;)

I can't argue that reasoning. ;D

If only my daughter was that easy to convince. She will be like cool we are going to the beach. Then she will argue when she sees the poles in the car ;D

I can hear it now. "Dad we are going fishing aren't we" ::) ;D
