Does the full moon effect the surf perch bite ? I wanna go out this weekend but not if I could be home sleeping catching the same amount! ;)or should I just be fishing the tides regardless of what the moon is? Manresa /sunset still best bet? Got a friend who wants to try by the barge in seacliff.Any opinions? :-?

I have found that the bite is slower during a full moon. I believe the reason for this is that the full moon, the night before, lilluminates the small bait most of the night that the perch normally feed on during the day.

Good luck and tight lines!

Full Moon or New Moon is about the only time I go. I go either 2 days before or 2 days after and usually do pretty good. On the other hand I will go any day that there is 5-6' high tides and do almost just as well.

If I can find out how to post pics I have some pics of some nice slabs that I caught a few days ago and would like to share. :-/ :-? [smiley=duh.gif]

4 to 5 days before and thru the moon am high cloudy morning fish grubs castmasters crocks behind the big waves, just like drifting for steelhead. top of the sand bar into the hole they like to hide in white water if the rip is running from right to left start at right side of the hole let it fall into the hole. they eat crockadiles, so do stripers

I'm not giving any advise as to how to fish for these,
but it still amazes my when I see a huge surf pole for
perch. while the pics above show he caught fish,
I use a sm trout pole with 8# test or less and stand in
ankle deep water casting only about 15-30ft out that's it.
the sand crabs the perch are going for are in the sand near
shore when the wave action is pulling them out.....
I know you catch fish casting way out there. but in close for
those of you who don't know get just as many fish.....

see this pic, the wave just in front and that small black spot to
the right.... I cast just to that wave, let it settle and then reel
back 3 turns at a time, pause 1 2 3 4 5, now reel 3 more till
its back in about 10 feet or so...... that the technique....

this on the other hand would not be a good surf perch spot to fish.....

sorry about the size of the top 2, I tried to reduce them a bit,
but it comes up too big, sorry.
if a mod, wants to reduce them feel free..... smilin steve.

Well first I'm not giving any advise either, but all I would say is to each his own, but as you can see whatever way is my way it seems to be working. Just for the record though I agree with what you say, but I fish with (2) poles. A 12' Kencor Surf Rod. a Penn Slammer Reel w/Seaguar Carbon Pro 8 lb test, a Carolina rig w/Seaguar Carbon Pro 6 lb test, 2,3, or 4 oz Pyramid weights and a 4/6/8 Circle hook to cast out far.

I also use a 9' Kencor Surf Rod with the same type of reel & rig to fsh in close as you say. It's just the longer rod is for honey holes that are too far out to cast with th shorter rod. Unfortunately I am no longer able to walk out in the water like I use to due to bad knees, but I think I still do pretty good just the same. Again it's just to each his own. So good luck, but I probably will do better my way then yours just the same. *:) :o ;)

your efforts......

Thank you, but that is not necessary. I understand and as I said to each his own. Because beleive me I have tried them all, but this way just seems to fit my life style and do much better for me than any other way. Not to bragg, but as you can see I have no problems and do just as good if not better every time I go. That is the reason I buy a commercial license in addition to a regular license every year. Because I catch so many. Dont get me wrong I do not sell anything I catch. I just drive too far and enjoy it too much to only be limited to so many fish. I like to get there at least 2 hours before high tide and stay 2-3 hours after high tide. So what ever I catch during that time I want to be able to keep them and to do what ever I want with them. Be it eat them (Delicious), freeze them or give them away to friends or family.

So don't worry you have not said or did nothing wrong, but I get the message. What ever works best at the time is what I say. So good luck and good fishing. Besides I am sure that what you said can and will help others. *;) :) ;)

KeepItReel,
Nice catch, 8-) i like wadding through the water myself, but have always wanted to surf fish and cast out, especially after standing and wadding for hours, gets kind off tiring, what beach did you catch those slabs at, i'd like to get into some of the bigger BSP's on my lighter tackle

Thanks for all the detailed info. 8-) I have gotten a few surf striper's but have yet to get a surf perch while targeting them.

Keep it Reel raises a question. What does a commercial license cost and what is the limit with a commercial license? For that matter what is the limit for the sport angler? I realy like surf fishing but only get to fish a little time that I squeeze into "family " trips to the coast.

I'm of the opinion that these two guys a BOTH on the money. If you decide to go lighter and closer, you don't need a long surf rod. But if you want a chance to hook into some monsters, you'll want to hit them where they live by casting out farther, so a long surf rod is in order. I know some that do both - they'll soak bait far out there while they work the inner breakers with light tackle and grubs.

It's all good...

I'm not quite sure of what you mean by the Sport Angler, but at any point I am only familiar with the Commercial License which you have to buy a sticker to be place on the commercial License and cost Approximatly $125 for 1 year from March 31 - March 31 the following year, but there is also a second part you must buy for approximately another $80. It is good from August 1, - March 31. Then from April 1 - July 31 your Commercial License is no good, which is mating season. So if you want to fish during that period of time you have to also buy a regular license or Ocean License for another $40 or so.

Now with the Commercial License I know it is only good for certain areas and you would have to ask DFG, but I use it at Pismo Beach only and my limit is unlimited, but with the Ocean License the limit is only 10.

Now I think I got it right, but if in doubt give DFG a call. Either way to me to be able to fish when you want, for as long as you want and to catch as many as you want it is worth it. Hopefully I have been of some help to you or at least gave you an idea. Good Luck.
