Is it a good idea to hike on the Merced River Trail and camp there? I have some young men who want to camp and fish and I wonder if it is okay to camp near that trail or do I have to stay to the campsites?
Is it a waste of time to fish below the Foresta Bridge?
Thanks, Jim

not sure about the camping, but I believe the river is only open from the bridge to the park boundary this time of year...you should check the regs.

Hi Waterworks,
Regarding the Merced River. The Merced is open year round. The limit on trout is 2 until the end of April. Above the foresta bridge you need to fish with artificials and barbless. Only browns can be taken. The rainbows are native species and very beautiful. I would suggest camping at Dry Gulch campground which is on incline road. You'll find many access points to the river from there. To get to incline road, cross foresta bridge and make a left. Camping along the river is prohibited.

Good Luck :)
