Went to Topaz Lake to check it out prior to the opener and get my 2010 California license. Arrived around 0945. The weather was overcast with temps in the mid 20s with no wind. There were patches of ice in the middle of the lake and along the Southeast shore. Dave and I first checked out the North Shore. It was generally free of ice except for one spot where some had drifted in. The County Park area and the adjacent east shore and boat ramp were free of ice.* The roads were clear and free of ice. Next we checked out the south below the bug station. The water here was free of ice. The dirt road down to the lake was snowy and slick. 4WD recommended. We then checked out the lake below the Lodge and found it free of ice. It seems to me that barring any weather disasters Topaz is a go. Got my license and headed home.
