View Full Version : A few days at Eagle with dad

My dad (gave him the handle of Commander Dave) and I have been doing a fall trip to Eagle lake for 20 plus years with a few years missed from time to time.* October is our normal time but too much going on this year so went in September.* We arrived on Thursday September 24th and just returned a few hours ago.

After putting our stuff in the cabin rental we headed out to try the afternoon fishing on Thursday.* 10 minutes after putting our lines in the water we had a fish on.* 10 minutes later we had another fish on.* Then we fished for 3 more hours with no other hits.* Man was it hot up there.* Little did we know it would kind of be a hint of things to come for us.* Toughest Eagle trip for us in recent memories.

On Friday morning we teamed up with Kokoloco who was staying at the same campground as Vacaville Bob.* We covered a lot of water with Kokoloco for only two fish.* On Friday evening, Commander Dave and I joined Kokoloco and his wife at Vacaville Bob's campsite for a little food, a few cold ones and lots of stories.* Thanks for the great time Bob and Sam.

Saturday and Sunday were similar to the other days with a fish here and there, never very hot for us.* Others did much better than us.* We did pick up a 20 inch fish that might have weighed 2 pounds, should have been over 3 pounds. 2 out of 3 of our fish looked like they were on a diet.

Hit the lake for a couple hours this morning before heading home.* Landed two with two LDR's, probably our best outing of the trip.* Bob thank you for all the help on the water, the commander really got a kick out of the radio chatter.* Hope you and your son get into them.

Couple of interesting things from the trip.* We fished 4 days and never saw wind.* I've never been to Eagle where the wind didn't blow us off one day.* Last year the wind blew for three solid days.* It was so warm I never put on my heavy coat.* Looked at the miles on the GPS as we were pulling out today, we traveled 110 miles while on the lake.*

Going out with Kokoloco on Friday I found a rock with my prop at the Spaulding ramp.* Some times it would take the electric to get out, other days I could get out with the motor up as far as I could get it.* Rumor is they are dredging this week.

Fishing wasn't great for us but nothing better than spending a few days on the water with Commander Dave.* Then to fish with other good friends was just frosting on the Eagle Lake cake.* Thanks again Bob and Sam, let's plan for next year.* We used watermellon and brown grubs for our fish.

Lots of pics, took tons of sunrise pics because I wasn't netting fish for the commander, will only bore you with a few sunrise pics.

2nd fish on Thursday

One sunrise pic

Me with a nice fish on the day we fished with Kokoloco

Got to see this picture several times, Vacaville Bob with a fish on

Another boat side pic

Ok, another sunrise pic

“Commander Dave” watching the rods at sunrise

Commander Dave with one of his fish.* This is the one that was 20 inches but probably only weighed 2 pounds

It's been three pics since I posted a sunrise pic, must be time for one

Vacaville Bob with a couple volunteers

Time for before and after pics.....

This is what the water looked like every day this year

This is last year

The commander with one of our fish from today

We worked our way home today by stopping at the south ramp before heading home.* Little on the shallow side but you can launch a boat

Not the best fishing for the commander and me but a great trip.* Looking forward to the next trip.

A most excellent report Gadget and first rate pictures. 20 years of trips to Eagle ….wow......sweet. Wish I could get my Dad to come up for some trips. That had to be a grand time with dad and friends around.

I’m really itching to do a 2-3 day trip to Eagle in the next month or so. I was so impressed with Eagle on my first trip this year.

Thanks Gadget. I would have driven up but I didn’t want to impose on your Dad and Son time.

Just think in a few short years you could spend a month there :)

I was up the last few day's as well, and yes it was hot.
I tried doing things a bit different this time and it payed off. I had limits each day, the smallest going 3 lbs. the largest just under 4 lbs. All just off the bottom.
I did meet Kokoloco as I walked back to camp. Met a few other sniffers as well. Every* time I went by Bob's he was out fishin', go figure?
Most other fish I saw were 2 lbs.
* When the temp's drop, we'll see bigger fish.
Still a great week at Eagle. :)

North River Boats are Nice, I'm trying to talk myself out of buying one. I'm not sure I can help myself! :'(

Great report Steve. Enjoyed all the pics very much. Those years with the commander are priceless... I wish you many more! The third sunrise pic is my favorite "so far :)" Weird weather for Eagle. Oh well fall is upon us now. The boatside fish pics are winners as well. Nice job to Sam and Bob too. See you on the water.... Steve.

Gadget, thanks for the report and great pics!* Heading up there for 7 days starting on the 18th.* Anything or anywhere work better than the other?* I'm sure with this cold weather coming in things will change dramatically.

Yes, I think things will be different for you. No special place for us, fish came from lots of different spots. If you use grubs I would probably take some 2 inch grubs along and give them a try. Your timing should be perfect.
