June 21, 2009 - Sunday

Caught a few at Del Valle.
June 21st Fathers day.
Cold morning, windy and 77 degrees later.

Our fish total in 09 is now 105
This was our 21st fishing trip this year.

We got up at 4am. Got to the lake at 6:10 and out to Heron bay by 6:30.
Mike put the new downrigger in the water. He was trolling at 25ft with a white grub and flashers.
I was trolling a brokeback firetiger and flashers.
No bites until Mike changed to a nightcrawler.
7:50-Mike caught fish 100 of the year! Just like he did last year. A nice 16" rainbow with bright red meat.
I on the other hand got snagged and lost my fish seeker and my firetiger and flashers. BUMMER!

At 9:30 we went to tarantula beach and baitfished for a while.
Mike took a nap.

!0:10-Kristy caught a small 12" trout on lemon lime power eggs and a fake brown worm. Bleeder. :-[
10:18-Kristy caught another midget 12" trout on the same getup. Sadly another bleeder. :-[
I'm not too good at hook removal...Sad face. :(

10:40-Kristy (me) was watching a cormorant try to swallow a fish but the the fish was attached to a line. I *look over and knowtice that my second pole is going crazy.
At this point the bird has the fish down his throat.
I didn't want the bird to swallow my hook so I reeled in and he spat the way dead 12" trout back up.
He was angry or embarrassed because he flew away immediately.

Dumb me but I rolled my ankle stepping down into the boat. OUCH!
Fishing over pain is my motto. :'(
Anyways we went back to trolling.
We got too shallow and Mike lost his whole flasher set up! >:(

Later we went to Swallow bay and drift fished. Didn't expect much but at:
2:33 Kristy caught a fat 14" trout on a nightcrawler. Nice red meat.

2:44 Mike caught a nice 15" *trout on green power eggs and a fake green worm. Bright orange meat.

We left a little early at 4pm and got home a bit after 5pm.
We might go back on Tuesday.

All in all 6 fish from fickle old Del Valle is a good day for us.
It was a nice Fathers day not being skunked!

Mike and Kristy. :)

we witnessed the leap from the boat and the valiant retrieaval of the way dead 12 " trout . I heard you say" not my fish!!" and then I saw you reel it in. He really did gulp that fish down! I thouht it would get ugly from there with the trout on your line and in the birds stomach , glad to see he was able to spit it out . Bet *he got a good flossing!!!

glad to see someone else saw the whole cormorant episode!!!
Didn't know you were sniffers too.
After about ten minutes my ankle stopped throbbing.
Thinking of going back tomorrow.
Tight lines ...

We just ate one for lunch, think it was a salmon, orangest meat I ever saw on a trout. Taste like salmon too!
We will try to put up more pics in the future. :)

Now that's a father's day story Mike and Kristy. Sounds like no matter how the day turned out you both had a fun time. I truly believe your encounter with the comorant because I have had my encounter with one a few months ago. Good luck on your next fishing trip, and FISH ON!
