Talked my wife and kids into heading to Beardsley Saturday morning after hearing the road down to the lake was open and clear. Some snow and ice at the top of the road, but it was a nice drive after that.

I've never had a problem launching my small boat on the sand, but the water was down another 30+ ft of shoreline from where it's been the past couple years which made me hesitant to launch. I backed down to the water, found some unusual (for here) packed mud patches under a couple inches of surface sand that I almost fell down on after slipping while looking at the water, and noticed that the lake bottom leveled out just below the water line... all reason enough for me to not scare the you know what out of my wife and kids and just bank it instead.

Here's a shot of my daughter reeling in a nice 15" brown caught on a rainbow Vibrax of all things (never done well with those).

I planned on trolling all morning, so I only brought one spinning rod and a handful of lures for casting. With the trout teasing us like crazy just beyond casting reach, it turned more into a play day for the kids than fishing. All in all a great day out there... and likely excellent fishing for anyone with a small boat that can be hauled in a pickup and dropped into the water.

Here's a shot down toward the dam.

Considering all the surface action and lack of pressure, I imagine a small boat, pontoon, or float tube could have a nice day. However, the road is likely to be closed again with the new series of storms forecasted next week. If you're gonna give it a shot, you better make it quick!

Starting to look like a pond, huh? Didn't you forget to warn people about all the poisonous snakes, rabid coyotes, and predatory grizzlies waiting to swoop down upon unsuspecting fishermen? Come on now, remember, that place is too dangerous to fish, stay away, go to nice safe Melones. ;D ;D ;D
Sure would be cool if F&G popped a truckload or two of nice brookies in there. Looks like the place was empty, so probably made the right call on not launching, but I bet it would have been epic.

I did forget to mention all the rattlers that come out in the spring and early summer to play... sometimes trying to get in the boat with you. Certainly not a place for everyone, especially if you get carsick, get poor gas mileage, or have a 2 wheel drive pickup. Thanks for reminding me Steve!

The first Brookie I ever caught was there in Beardsley, but that was many years ago !!!

As I was fishin the AB there a while ago, a brown bear, just 30 feet away, jumped in the water to swim to the other side... It can be dangerous for sure !!!
