View Full Version : New Melones at Tuttletown Ramp 12/28

12-28-2008, 07:54 PM
Took my wife, daughter and one of her friends, met up with fellow sniffer Hunkfisher in Jackson at 5:30am. We arrived at the Tuttletown ramp at 6:15 or so. Only saw one other vehicle there that early.
Set up camp at the end of the drive.
Hunk got the first fish,

Next it was my turn.

Things died off after a while but we kept getting the occasional fish. Hunk says "I think I will kep this one"

My girl is nice enough to make new rod holding sticks (as mine are in the garage at home).

Then Brad brings one in on the super secret CC special.

Just for reference, my wife went up top to the restroom and shot this from the top of the ramp. Don't think anybody will be launching here any time soon.
Now it was my turn to keep one. If you see that point behind us it would come into play very soon.
As you can see from the change in layers of clothing it turned into a beautiful day out there. Ranger tips his hat to my wife as he talks to us.
So we hiked out to that point because we kept seeing them roll on the surface over there. It was fish on for the next hour. Green Gulp was so hot that I would cast out that rod and before I could cast out a lure on my other I would have another strike on the gulp. It got so bad I put the first rod down for a while just so I could play with a lure of some type.
So Hunkfisher is either really hungry or he just loves fish a little too much.

Then I guess we started to get a little lazy out there. It went from green gulp to white power eggs and then back to green gulp to keep the fish happy. My daughter's friend got into the action a nailed a nice fish on a clear bobber floating gulp. We kept seeing this fish stealing all of the floating bait that got loose from other fishermen and she pulled him in after a couple of tries.

Hunkfisher with those that needed to go home today to see Jackson.

Our haul goes in the chest to chill.

It was a long story but it was a long day. 6:30am to about 2:30pm and we must have pulled down over 30 fish.

Brad, it was great getting a chance to go out there with you during your break. If the cards and Mother Nature cooperate we shall see you at the Topaz opening next week.

Cory. It just don't get any better than that. A beautiful day. cooperative trout. Nice folks to fish with and your own personal camera person. Wonderful story and pictures. In reguards to picture #10. Hunk does seem to get a little too involved in fishing sometimes. ::) ;D Hope to see you guys soon.

12-28-2008, 09:43 PM
Nice....Hunk put that move on a trout the day I talked with him too. Hmmm. I see a pattern developing. ;D

Lest anyone think its some bizarre ritual, he's just biting off the leader.

12-28-2008, 09:57 PM
Not going to lie some of those fish look better than the women of HSU ;D ;D ;D ;D
Cg it was great getting out could not have asked for a better day shirt sleeves by 9 and an amazing bite throughout mose of the day, the family made for some interesting commentary Corey, but much needed at some times. As for the fishing not as many out today but it had slowed a bit the bite is still early tough, easy limits to be had before 9, CG had the hot hand getting the bigger fish, great day with great friends i hope to see you in Topaz buddy.

Sounds like you all had a great day. That was us right next to you when you showed up in the morning. See you out there soon!!

12-29-2008, 08:39 AM
.... That was us right next to you when you showed up in the morning. !!

This certainly supports Sniffers wearing ball caps with STARS on them to readily identify us as Sniffers! 8-) ;D ;D

12-29-2008, 03:44 PM
Sign me up Seon, as soon as you get them made up you can pm me for my shipping address. ;)

12-29-2008, 04:31 PM
I like the ball cap with stars idea, I always wonder if there are any sniffers lurking. Ahhhh. Camo hats, gold stars. Sweeeet!

12-29-2008, 04:52 PM
I like it also. Please make mine a visor though.

12-29-2008, 04:57 PM

I thought their usage was limited to bone fishing in the Florida Keys??

sorry that aquaman & I jacked your thread....

12-29-2008, 05:00 PM
I like visors cause I get to hot in hats. I guess thats why my wife and friends call me Capt. Klondike when they are all bundled up and I wear shorts and a sweatshirt.

Or maybe I am just a bonehead.

12-29-2008, 05:50 PM
I feel your pain. You saw that I was the first person into shorts and a t-shirt. I even had to take my normal floppy hat off because of the heat, after all it was above 50.
Ok Seon now we need a vented cap, camo with gold stars....

CG *;D

Hope to make my first trip out there this winter tomarrow. I should be off at 7:30 then come home grab my stuff and hopefully be out the door by 8 ish or so. Hopin to fish the same area somewhere around the tuttle town ramp. I'll be the big guy in the blue hoodie, if anyone sees me say hi

12-30-2008, 02:07 PM
i Like the hat idea.... what a bunch of fools wearing gold stars on there hats.

my 2cents would be to have the stars on the side or on the back edge! You could sell 2 more if there were nice enough. Me and my daughter. Sometimes sniffers are hitchhikers in friends boats or on the shore and would be nice to identify.

12-30-2008, 02:10 PM
Just had another Idea for identifying Sniffers. Since the new licenses are larger and alot of people would like to have a holder that fits right. there could be a license holder with stars on. Lust a thought.

12-30-2008, 05:41 PM
Lust a thought. * *[/quote]

I lust after that thought also. :o The holder idea is great. I seldom wear a hat.

Phishndad, hope you slayed them as well as my son and me did yesterday. Tried to write you a report this morning at 0600. Went to post it, and it showed error. Web page under modification.

12-30-2008, 05:47 PM

I was there the same day, fishing to the left of the ramp, where the dirt meets the rip-rap. where were you?

12-30-2008, 06:06 PM
Steveo- We were fishing to the left of the boat ramp in the cove area. You must have seen my son flyfishing in the cove a few times. I was out a little pass the point. Were you the one with the little boy at the make shift tuber launch area? Out of the crowd, I knew there had to be another Sniffer out there. Between my son and I, we C&R released over a 100 fish. This by far was the best catching day I have ever enjoyed. My arm and back still aches from the constant action. It didn't really slow down until about 14:30- 15:15. Then the bite picked up again. Not as good as earlier in the morning, but steady. BTW- For you brown trout chasers. I did see a 8 plus brown surface around 17:10 in the middle of the cove left of the launch. I spent the next 20 minutes tossing a Rapala, but never saw him again. :'( Ok. Don't want to hijack somebody's thread.

12-30-2008, 07:31 PM
My truck was a white toyota, racks and shell, next to a new Black Dodge Dually.
I always wonder about the sniffer thing....I should get a flag... ;D

12-30-2008, 07:43 PM
Steveo-Will defintely look for you next time. I drive a red 4Runner 2001 dark tinted back windows. We were parked next to the cove trail area. The launch area was way too crowded for me. Might trek back out there New Years Day. Not sure yet. Not much into the crowded fishing style. Might hit Camanche instead. But do want to enjoy the catching while it's still going strong. Should still be good out there, since I saw the two DFG stocker trucks pulling out when we showed up Monday.

12-30-2008, 07:55 PM
Ok...I saw the red 4 runner. There was another white toyota, standard cab, with blue graphics there too. I was out on that point (where that kid in the camo was sitting), the day before. thats a great place to get away from the crush.

I wish i had checked this board out before taking my kids to amador today. It was a zoo out there with many rude boaters and bankers at the pond and no fish for us or any one we saw.

12-30-2008, 08:21 PM
The people around us at Melones were all great. I know what you mean, no fun when you do start catching an others start coming in and fishing on top of you. That's why I mostly stopped going to Pardee too.
We had a couple come over to see what we were using and how we were catching but then they went back to there own place. Didn't hear any yellling or confrontations the entire time I was there. I don't even remember seeing anybody cross lines although I am sure that had to happen.

It was a real good day out there.

12-30-2008, 08:34 PM
:)Got to take my 4 year old grandson out today, he had a ball, and, caught the biggest fish!

Wish I knew how to find fellow sniffers, probably crossed paths with a few the past two days.

12-30-2008, 09:00 PM
:)Thanks to Hunkfisher and Aquaman for the directions and assurance that the terrain was okay for the little one.

12-31-2008, 10:16 AM
Got out there late yesterday, about 11 am. first fish on green power eggs before I could even tie my castmaster on my other pole. fish came and went in spurts I would catch 4-5 fish really quick and then go 30 mins without a bite then all of a sudden it would pick up again. probably caught 15-20 or so untill about 2ish then it completely shut down for me and I left at 3:30. pretty good day out there and all the people I sat next to were really friendly and I had a good time ;D

12-31-2008, 10:25 AM
* Good for you! *I think the fish make laps around the cove! ;D *The times I would wind up in the middle of a line of bankers, I would watch the rods start bobbing, and you could count on a hit if you were in the path.

* * *That morning they planted, their first lap was about 5 ft from the bank. *I've never seen how the fish live inside a hatchery, but I bet they spend their time cruising the edges of the holding pen; once in open water, they do the same.

* *

12-31-2008, 04:52 PM
We actually launched Mon at TT and headed to the bridge. The scene at the ramp was great. I haven't seen that many kids catching fish in a long time. everyone was having fun. We caught and released 5 and missed like 3 up by the bridge but we had to leave before noon so I could go to the dentist. All of ours were on chrome stuff with a worm toplined...all 11-15 inches. Fight like they think they are real fish. What a great day on the lake.

01-01-2009, 01:00 PM
:)Hope these pictures work, it's my grandson Carter, having a great day at Tuttletown.

If they work, thank-you Aquaman!

01-01-2009, 04:15 PM
We made it out of the valley fog on New Years eve into the sunshine at Tuttletown. *

My whole family went along on the trip so we didn't get there too early but early enough to catch 15 fish from about 8 to 11 in the morning. *My dad second fish was the biggest, it was at least 2 pounds 16 inches and it was caught on the hot bait, orange gulp. *However several fish were caught on bright green gulp and silver kastmasters. *Later on three pink and white powereggs were working well. *All bait fished about 3 feet off the bottom with a sliding sinker rig. *I caught 6, kept 4 for dinner, everyone else in the family that fishes managed to get one on there own.

Here's my dad and brother fishing, you can see all the other people in the background.

There's where the boat ramp is, you can see all the cars in the parking lot.
The fishing was great for us and I hope to make it out there again.

01-01-2009, 06:07 PM
I was also fishing Melones on the 28th with my son, nephew and his friend.

We fished the cove to the left of the ramp(Looking Down ) and caught 4 limits in about 4 hours. *No holdovers, great day for my 8 year old though, he managed to catch most of the fish.

Gonna try to take him and my daughter out on Saturday.

01-01-2009, 07:56 PM
:)Mother_lode, it's great to see the kids having fun, Carter is two months short of 4 years old and is begging me to take him fishing again!

Mom is pretty strict though, school has priority, even if it's only pre-school.

01-01-2009, 09:08 PM
Motherlode and Papagreg, good to see all the little one's out there fishing. The boy and me were out there again today fishing the cove area. Plenty of trout still left. Not as fast and furious as before. But quick limits and high counts for the C&R guys.

We had a 4 year old fishing next to us. He was a hoot, running back and forth reeling in poles and giving me a lecture about things. Across the way at the make shift dirt ramp was another little one reeling in fish. It's great seeing the kids hooked on fishing event.

Today was overcast and brrrrrr all day. Sun never broke out from the low cloud cover. Good luck to you guys out there!

01-01-2009, 10:02 PM

I'm glad to see the pics came out!!!! There is nothing more enjoyable than a little guy getting into fishing like that. I say take him out of pre-school and take him fishing!!!!!!! Sometimes there is more to be learned away from school from great families!!!!!!

Just my .02

01-02-2009, 04:53 PM
:)Aquaman, I've believed that since my uncle used to take me fishing years ago!

It's a pretty tough argument in my family, my wife teaches at Colombia college and Carter's mother teaches in Calaveras county, but they both know I speak the truth when I use the argument; he'll learn more from his "gampa" in one day's fishing then he'll learn in a week of pre-school.

I am totally amazed at what he retains, for instance, he tells me where we are supposed to turn, wants to know if I remembered to bring the net, etc., etc.!

I've had the older grandson out in the boat and I've showed him turtles basking in the sun, frogs lounging in the shallows, ospreys catching fish, river otters searching for food and bald eagles nesting, that's hard to beat nad something you'll never find in a textbook!!!!!!

01-02-2009, 04:56 PM
:)Forgot to add, had him at Pardee last year and the wife and daughter came later for a picnic.
Don't know how many of you have been to Pardee, but there are bbq's and picnic tables close to the lake, in some spots.

We had a GREAT time, caught some fish and had a bbq lunch lakeside!

01-02-2009, 07:03 PM
I might be headed out that way on monday or wednesday next week for one final run! Nice to hear people are still doing some catching.

Brad "Hunkfisher"

PapaGreg, & Motherlode,
Great pics and experience for the little guys. Nice to see them catching fish too. Nice pics holding up the stringer full, you should make them a little bragging stick that they can hold up next time.
It was looking so good out there that if the wind stayed down I might run out on Sunday again and take my pontton this time.

01-03-2009, 08:55 PM
Very slow out there today. man what a difference a few days makes. :P Tuesday was quick action but today when I took the kids out there we fished 3-4 hours for only 1 2lber. Only had one hit on pb and had 4 different color combos out on differnt poles. The only fish we caught came on my first cast with a gold kastmaster that saved our day from being a skunk. Only saw a handful of fish caught while we were there too. Maybe the bite was better early in the AM because we got there kinda late like around 11ish or so but I was sure the bite would have been better than it was. Oh, well I guess sometimes you gotta pay your dues :(

01-03-2009, 10:13 PM
Don't feel like the Lone Ranger, I've had a couple days there where I thought the fish had all left. Tomorrow is another day, and I'll be there around 7am or so, going to walk a little bit, and fish off Power Point.

Have to admit, don't ever remember seeing so many people fishing at Tuttletown. I hear Don Pedro is on fire! ;)

01-03-2009, 10:32 PM
Well Melones still on fire, I fished from 11:30am-2pm C&R over 20+ fish. I was the only person at the cove until Motherlode and his kids arrive. They were killing them on inflated nightclawler, its was fast and fun for his kids. Love to see the smile on the kids face. *
Motherlode it was nice to meet you and your kids. Hope to do some BASS fishing with you soon.

:)sollimes, nice pictures, it's great to see the kids catching fish and having a good time, plus it looks peaceful.

WARNING: If you're heading to Melones via highway 49, use extreme caution near Carson Hill mine, it is VERY icy and has been the scene of several spin-outs/accidents the past few days.

01-04-2009, 12:37 PM
My kids and I had a great time fishing Melones, Theo, it was a pleasure meeting you!

I'm looking forward to some Bass fishing with you, let me know when you get settled in the new place.

01-04-2009, 03:33 PM
Good Looking Fish Theo hope to get out there on thursday this week, unfortunatly ill have to choose between melones or pedro as i only get two days to fish this week before going back to arcata, and i am fishing amador on tuesday ;)

01-05-2009, 12:21 PM
I will be out there this Saturday around TT area, but away from the planters. Going to my spot, looking for the big boys and just bait fishing this time.

01-09-2009, 02:24 PM
:)Spent a WINDY morning with the grandson and his dad, had a good day, we left with twelve fish and probably lost that many.

Tough bite today, perhaps due to the wind, but they were hitting very lightly, unlike last week when they were practically pulling your rod into the water.

Had to leave early, 11am, saw hunkfisher on the way out and he said he and his buddy had five.

Once again, quality time with the little one!!!!!!!

01-09-2009, 06:23 PM
I am thinking about hitting it up in the morning in my toon again. Hope that wind goes away tomorrow. Wind & toon = not good.
Look for me in the bright yellow boat.

01-09-2009, 06:55 PM
Hey, I'll be in the same spot you saw me last time. See you out there.

01-09-2009, 07:26 PM
We had a day out there got off to a late start due to the fact that Matt came up from Kingsburg about 3 hours but the night before he drove up from San Diego so i gave him a breather and let him sleep a bit. Anyways on the water at 10 am in that cove right next to the low water parking ramp and it was on, people said a very light bite they slammed the Gulp in Rainbow, White and Green also had a few on White power eggs and white marshmallows, windy till about 2 then the sky was blue the sun came out and it got warm! It was a great day CR over 35 fish between the two of us and I missed about 13 or so on light taps and late swings. Also got them on a grasshopper fly, that was a blast, cast out into the rising fish a strip and then explosion! This was my last trout trip for a while as I fly back to the Lost Coast tomorrow morning (washed up football players gotta work now >:() had a Lotta fun down here this winter looking forward to a productive spring and numerous metalhead trips on the mad! Good luck to those who make it out there this week the bite is still ON!

One more nice day at New Melones Hunk. Nice seeing you at Topaz. Good luck at HSU. See you this spring.

01-09-2009, 07:41 PM
Good going Brad,It was fun having fished with fellow sniffers while you were on spring break.Hope to make it to Melones soon maybe even tommorow.Next time I come up I''ll give you a holler Cory.Efren

01-09-2009, 07:53 PM
Safe trip back and hope to see you on the next trip down. I guess that will be Spring Break. *I will pound them out tomorrow, I want a new pb for most fish in a day and I think I have the tools and techniques to do it.
Got to get in my on water time while I can, the child has auditions for pro stage show of Les Mis next week and if she gets the part our lives will be busy until May & June when the shows come up.
Have agood rest of the year up there and keep us posted on the Mad exploits, guess we need to watch another board now..

Effren if you show up it looks like I will be there. Taking my toon for the extra positioning. Looks like at least one fellow sniffer will be there on the bank. PM me if you are going. I will be at the lower tuttletown lot in the cove in my toon.

Steveo see you out there

01-09-2009, 08:49 PM
:)Hunk, we were the ones in the maroon Toyota on the way out, asked you how many you had, around 11 am.

Have a safe trip back.

01-12-2009, 12:30 PM
:)Hit Melones for one last time before the EVIL WORK starts.

Arrived at dark thirty and walked out to the point on the first cove to the left of the ramp.

Caught three fairly quickly, then a lull for about half an hour and two more for the bbq!

Four caught on powerbait, one on a lure, they have definitely slowed down, but if you want to put the time in, you won't be disappointed.

Probably done at Melones, next stop- PARDEE!!!!!

01-12-2009, 09:09 PM
I went out there and fished at the Tuttletown Ramp on the 5th and had to beat the trout off with clubs!

Spent about 4 hours in the morning and banked 13 up to 17" (a bit over 2lbs on the scale). Missed probably at least that many bites too. A lot of the strikes were real hard, causing even my medium/heavy rod to take a nice fat dip.

Used chartreuse Gulp Power Eggs almost exclusively, but also had some action on orange powerbait.

The first bite came less than 30 seconds after the bait hit the water for the first time.

Kept my limit for some co-workers to enjoy. :D

01-13-2009, 06:50 AM
The more recent planters hit very aggressively, and without much regard for color, or type of bait or lure, from what I've seen out there the last month or so. Empty stomachs have been the rule, with some having rocks and twigs in there belly. The bite has slowed down a bit the last few days, be it from the full moon, fewer (if any) plants this month by F&G, heavy angling pressure, or the fish that have survived, just being more selective. I caught several fish Sunday the 11th with powerbait inside, and the bite was very light that day.
Be interesting to see how it holds up over the nest month or so.

01-15-2009, 08:42 PM
:) :)Just wanted to let people know, I submitted some pictures to The Fish Sniffer, showing my grandson catching fish at Melones............ well, he made the Sniffer on the Hot-Bites page!!!!!

Thank you very much Sniffer!!!!!!!

01-15-2009, 08:53 PM
Congrats to him! 8-) I'll be looking for his pic. in the mag....

01-16-2009, 01:23 PM
:)rpwlaw11, thanks, he's all excited to go to the ISE show tommorrow!

Hey, I know a celebrity!!!!!

Good luck to all who are fishing this week-end.

01-16-2009, 07:11 PM
Hello fellow sniffers, I'll be heading up to melones to fish and camp.I was wondering how the fishing has been for trolling.I know that the fishing from shore has been doing better as of late but I'm bring the boat just to get away from the crowds.I'll maybe hit up one of the other lower elevation lakes on my way back to the bay area unless Melones really produces.Any info would be appreciated.Efren
