View Full Version : Topaz, an 11 Day (Pics)

Arrived at Topaz Lake with Mrs. Compassion just before 10 AM. Fished the north shore just west of the County Park. I carried the stuff down to the shore while Mrs. C. stayed above a few minutes to straighten up the car. I decided to take a couple of casts. On my second cast something hit my 1/4 oz gold Kastmaster. I brought in a beautiful but somewhat stunted Bow that was a couple of oz. short of two pounds. *By the time Mrs. C. made it down to the shore I all ready had one on the stringer. Mrs. C set out with green gulp and in less than 10 minutes had herself a feisty hold over bow. Well if you know anything about Topaz you can probably guess that there was nothing more for the rest of the day. Around 12:30 Jetspray dropped by. He was fishing up the shore from us were he caught 2. It is mid winter in Northern Nevada at over 5,000 feet in elevation. The sun was shining brightly without a breath of wind with the temperature around 60 degrees. If there is such a thing as an 11 day this was it.

Way to go Richard. Agreed, that is beauty of a bow. I wouldn't know, all I've managed are the recent 10-13 inch NDOW stockers. You know, if one or two hookups is the norm, you may consider banking it at Tahoe. You might only get .5 or so fish a trip, but they will probably be some bigguns. Just food for thought. I may be able to show you a spot that is bank accessible that I toplined some macks from last year.

Hey guys set the record straight my hat was made in Korea. It doesn't say which side of the 38th paralell it came from, but it doesn't have anything red on it. It was a beautiful day and I heard on the radio that nvtroller was doing good out on the water. He was BBQ'n hotdogs when we called him from shore on the VHF ch69. I got my Douglas County sticker for my truck so now it will be easy to launch $25 for the year for seniors and ranger said $50 more ($75) for other residents of Douglas County.....Jetspray

You are correct. Gold doesn't work as well on cloudy days. Try a crome/blue or a rainbow trout pattern. On cloudy days I'll often use jigs or countdown Rapalas.

Kevin
Use a jig just tie it on to 4 or 6 # test cast out either swim it on top or drag it off the bottom with lifts every coupl of feet usually works pretty well!

Trout Traps, Stingers, Small tube jigs, Berkley makes various small plastic jigs. Plastic crappie jigs. My favorite is the Stinger. It is in the middle of the attached picture.

Trolled Topaz last Saturday. Two of us landed 16 fish in about 3.5 hours. We concentrated along the eastern shoreline of the south end, and the mouth of the river. We were using Sep's sidekick dodgers in the half gold and silver pattern with a worm. Also, did good using the small gold sep's flasers with a worm. We did get one on a brown trout pattern rapala. The biggest fish was 17in 2.5 lb cutbow (football). The next biggest was a skinny bow 20 in and 2 lb.

Sounds like an excellent day Cutbow. Seems that the trollers are doing better than the shore folks. I went out again today off the North Shore and drew the http://img54.imageshack.us/img54/4144/skunk29gc.gif
