Eagle Lake was different this time - very different.

Lake was at an all time low making it challenging both ways to launch.

Weather was perfect - too perfect.

EL trout were few and far between and we had to work for what we got. Fished for 4 days and enjoyed every minute.

Oh fish ??? yes indeed we did - worked hard and was rewarded.

Ran into VVBob, Kokerunner and Fish Brain. Thanks for the secret lure Don. One of the guys in our party hooked up with 21 nice trout the second day. What'd we use - EVERYTHING. Nightcrawlers prevailed.

Here's a pix summary.

Met VV Bob for dinner one evening - good eats

congrats on an eagle lake trip.

the weather was almost too perfect the week before as well, but we found some really consistent fishin grounds. where on the lake were you fishing? to my knowledge, this time of year, the fish tend to move north until the water cools too far, then they turn back south for warmer deeper water.

nightcrawlers fished various ways were probably the most productive for us, but certain color slow trolled grubs, and certain color faster trolled hard minnow baits produced nicely too.

Hey Dave,

We fished mostly north of the narrows and up towards Eagles Nest.

15 - 25 on the depth was the most productive. However, one of my buds caught 21 one day in the shallows directly accross from Spalding.

There was a lot of boat traffic pressuring the big schools and they scatter easy.

EL - always fun and productive.

Sorry for taking so long to post... Just wanted to say I had the best fishing ever at Eagle this year. In fact, I probably saw well over 100 fish boated the nine days I was there. Most fish were between 3 - 4 lbs with our largest @ 4 1/2.

Most productive lure was a secret I shared with Itukawal. OK, Chic, you'll just have to come to Eagle to find out what it was. But, basically, nightcrawlers did a good job. You can bring all the tackle you want to Eagle, but most people will only use a hook, swivel, and worm threader to get quality fish.

Coming back into CA I was stopped by Fish & Game and had my cooler and fishing license checked. They also had a dog go around my boat sniffing... I was later told they weren't looking for drugs, but for the mussels. Whew!

I showed them my fish and one guy knew that I knew the rules for ELT; 4 in possession. He told me that I should have seen how many one guy had... I'd hate to be the one who paid that fine!

It was a very good week. Nice to have finally met Vacaville Bob and Itukawal. Every time I meet another Sniffer, I'm always impressed by how friendly everyone is. One of these days I'm going to have to party at one of those there Snifferfests!

Where did you get stopped at? And why would they freak about Mussels after you told them you were at Eagle.

Yes, your "secret flies" ;) have been working well at Eagle Lake this year, but so have others so long as they are the right color/s. I tie a pattern myself (so its really a secret) specifically for Eagle Lake that has caught fish there every time it has been in the water this year. IMO its the color and the wiggle fin that really closes the deal when trolling these guys rather than the brand.

Eagle has ben good again this year and it sounds like you really enjoyed your visit!

I don't get onto this site often enough as I work long hours...

Circlehook,

They pulled every boat to the side at the new agricultural check point on I-80 West just before you come into Truckee. I also saw them working Hiway 395 North on my way out of CA. From Roseville to Eagle Lake, you go through Reno. So, you actually have to go out of and back into CA.

I was told by a friend that they were dogs used to look for the mussels; not drugs. But, I agree with your point. Doesn't make sense to be looking for them up there as I believe the mussel problem originated in the Bay Area.

If you've heard about the mussel problem (and, what boat fisherman hasn't?) then you know that they can restrict your boat from accessing some lakes if it's registered in certain counties. They are pretty serious about it. Even if you don't get pulled over at the check stations, they'll ask the date and location your boat was last in the water and also make sure you've removed the drain plug.
