stayed at Caples Lake Resort Sunday and Monday nights, it was so windy I thought it would blow the bark off the trees * :o ! *20 degrees with a wind chill factor of conservatively guessing -9 degrees! *went out and fished for a few hours Sunday afternoon until it got dark, my fingers got so cold they hurt and I could not tell I was cutting into my hands with the 4 lb. test line. *caught one Mackinaw that was 24 to 30" and maybe 5 to 8 lbs. *it would not fit in my net so while I was trying to figure out what to do it broke my swivel snap open and swam off with my lure. *managed to catch several smaller Macks.
Monday dawned with a roaring wind that would not let up. *I drove around to Silver, Kirkwood, and Red lake looking for a calmer spot of which there were none. *tried fishing at Red Lake Monday late afternoon and it was dead calm there but I got skunked. *Tuesday morning was calm! *hardly no wind so I fished Caples lake for a few hours and caught 5 or 6 three lb. or so Macks. *the water is dirty at Caples, only about 3' clarity. *I was using ultralight and microlight gear at Caples, made catching even the poor fighting Macks a bit of fun. *all fish were released.

progress being made on the Caples Lake ramp! *there was a sign by the highway to direct the cement trucks in so I imagine they are starting to pour the ramp:

Nice Report Atavuss. Yes the weather was a little ratty over the weekend. Seems like you found the Macks that the DFG couldn't find. ;) Very good. Might have to go up there and take a cast or two. It was sure beautiful up there today.

Atavuss,
Got to give you credit for even finding water at Caples. Talking to the friends from work that are invloved in building the new ramp they are very happy with the progress. We all know that mother nature won't help for to much longer this year.
At the rate things are going you should have a spanking new ramp around August next year. ;D
Them there are those of us with a toon that don't need no stinking ramp.

we will see if the lake fills up enough to even use the new ramp next year and if any of the fish left from this year will survive. *the water level according to John from Caples Lake Resort is only 20' at the deepest in one small section of the lake. *the majority of the lake is only 11' deep. *it was sad to see the once beatiful lake as it is now. *the wind was blowing dust from the dried up lake beds all over. *one of the guys that was fishing with me actually caught a crawdad on his lure at least once. *I wish I had remembered to take my crawdad trap.
to add a real downer to my trip when I got home I found someone had stolen my son's Toyota pickup this morning from our driveway.

Great report!!

thanks! it was strange being up there during the week as there was hardly anyone else around. saw about 8 or 10 vehicles with trailers at Silver Lake on my way home this morning, seemed busy for a weekday there.

from what everyone says Macks are not the best tasting fish. I probably will keep one to try for myself next trip.
