Salmon festival is this weekend and I'm taking my daughter out to do some fishing at Lake Natoma. Need some recommendations for trout bait?

DFG usually sets up a penned area and puts 500 trout in it for the festival.

All the usual stuff for planters, green powerbait or 1/2 a crawler.

a net... No but what what Empire suggested works. I might be down there later in the afternoon,

They let you fish in those back ponds during the fest? Is there a fee?

No what they do is plant and gate of a little section near the CSUS Aquatic center and let you fish there. They are all planters, so i usually just C&R w/ barbless hooks, but i am wanting to test out my new smoker, so who knows :D. Oh and Steve, what day do you think you will be going, i might be able to give you a little incite and on hand help if you need / want it ;).

Yea no worries, Yea, i think they START to plant it at 10am :-/. I gotta work at 9, so i don't think that i will be able to make it... Yet again those fish will probably be in shock for a couple of hours before they start to feed, so i guess thats a good thing ;D

Hi all,

I volunteered last year at the Salmon Festival for DFG and what worked was the following:

-Power bait 3 feet under a float
-Power bait fished on the bottom
-Small spoons

I wont be able to volunteer this year due to work duties, but there is always next year :D

no...the dfg plants from the truck. fished again today by the net and caught only 3. didn't catch any thing after 8 o'clock. the first hour it was off the hook. fish were all in close and on top. had many LDRs and SDRs. need new hooks i think. TT it was a pleasure to fish w/you. see ya @ amador real soon.

Went fishing at Natoma yesterday with a couple friends. Saw quite a few amador sized trout chasing minnows, but they weren't interested in any powerbait or lures. Got one bite jigging a power minnow but that's it. Trolled for a while with no results, lost a lure, and decided to go cheer ourselves up on the helpless stocked trout at the festival. Got there around 10:40. Had powerbait in the water the whole time and not even a nibble. There was a surprisingly small number of people pulling fish. Maybe because of the wind. My friend got the first one on a gold 1/4 ounce kastmaster and me and my other friend quickly tied on kastmasters and started pulling them in. Caught and released at least 10 each, and ended up keeping 5 all together among us for dinner. Overall pretty fun, although way too windy.
