Well I've had better days at Pyramid. Started out trolling in front of the RV park, first thing my buddy Rick gets a nice takedown before the sun was up, using a U-20 frog. He panicked when it wouldn't reel and instead of tightening the drag he hit free spool, bye-bye fish. Chick and Kevin showed up right after that and we started trolling south towards the nets. About an hour later I have a nice fish on using a firetiger U-20, reel it half way in and it hit the surface, I backed off to get him back down and you guessed it bye-bye fish. :'( All this time we hear Mongo on the radio catching fish south of Hell's Kitchen. Across the lake we go, Chick wasn't too far behind. Well it took us awhile to find them, in the meantime Chick and Kevin are now catching fish. By the time we got there Tim was saying that the bite was over for him, about that time I finally got one to the boat, small 16"er, on a Capt. Ken's double flutter watermelon. Now I see Tim sitting there not moving so I think he got another fish. Awhile later he says he's having motor troubles. Long story short his motor's dead and he's not going anywhere. We towed him back to the dock, then fished another 2 hours for nothing. Slow day for us. Lots of gunk in the water, it may be turning over??

Tim did pretty good south of Hell's. Hopefully he'll post some pics, I think he said he got 3 in the 23" range and a few others. I think we just got there to late. I hope you give me a better report by next Tuesday. ::) :D ;D

We were there! We got in late, about 9:25, had to get the older kids to school - started out way south of hell's kitchen, and trolled up form there to hell's kitchen - ended up catching 1 17" 1 18" and 1 19.5" let go a 21" and 2 suckers-

we lost a few right up at the boat too

We heard you all on the radio, and chimed in a couple times-

Fish hit a firetiger trolling fly, 2x frog j-plug, and a 2x florescent orange and black dot spoon - cheap 3for 4.50 spoon, lol

Boat ran great, yeah! Nice for a change!

So, all in all was a fun day - we live so close we stayed out longer than we needed too - but it was fun -weather is supposed to be windy saturday, but should go back sunday-

The algae bloom is Nodularia spumigena. It is a blue green nitrogen fixer that blooms most years from August through September as the water first starts to cool. Blooms don't last very long and they are suppressed by windy conditions. So the bloom should be gone after the fronts pass this weekend. We saw it out there on Friday, mostly at the north end of the lake. But I didn't know if the bloom was starting or going away.

Some years it covers the entire lake for about a week. It is only in the very top of the water column (the algae produces gas bubbles to float to the surface where CO2 levels are highest). You can fish right through the stuff if you are using downriggers and can keep the gunk off your line before you lower the ball.

Majakat,

Congrats on the nice day, but I'll bite what is a 2-x frog J-plug? (Like I need anymore Pyramid tackle!)
Doc, for those without a PhD in fishy biology, WTH the heck did that mean fishing wise? I love to learn but when you toss out Latin phrases like Nodularia spumigena (or biology phrases) you loose me. Keep it simple for those of us who take the short yellow bus to work! http://www.fishsniffer.com/forumsyabb2008/Templates/Forum/default/cry.gif

OK. Pyramid Lake is low in nitrogen. During good water years, a lot of nitrogen flows in from the Truckee. When this doesn't happen, like this year, there is a blue green algae in the lake that can take nitrogen directly from the air dissolved in the surface water and fix it into compounds that are the raw material to make proteins and other biological molecules. This increases the biological productivity of the lake. When the algae grows and then dies off, the biological material they contain is recycled into other organisms, which increases the productivity of the lake. Thus, there will be plenty of stuff for the tui chubs to eat and lots of tui chubs to make the trout grow fast and big.

For people from the very short yellow bus: ;)

Slimy filamentous blue green algae = more fish

Don't let the algae stop you from fishing. All you have to do is find a clear spot where you can get your line down and just troll through the stuff.

Or you can just ignore all of this since the bloom will likely be over by the time of the fest. ;D

* * * It was a slow day for us as well. Chick put ALOT of miles on her boat today. Suttcliff, Blockhouse, Anderson, then Hells Kitchen and also accross to the Mushroom. Marked alot of fish in front of Suttcliff but no takers. Marked not so much at Blockhouse and the Kitchen or Mushroom. Ended the day around 4 pm with 6 landed and 3 lost. 17 1/2 inches to 24 inches. 30 ft and 32 where the best depth. Water tepths where 68 (Block House) early warming to *73 at the Kitchen. Firetiger spoon and fire tiger apex only fish getters.

Waiting to launch
