i went out to the central valley for labor day weekend and tried balsam meadows.... and i could have sworn i saw a hundred golden trout jumping out of the water.... i thought to get golden trout you had to be up higher than that... has any one else seen or hooked some goldens out that way

They were most likely brook trout. I have fished it before a few times about 5-6 years ago, we caught alot rainbows there..

Sounds like brookies to me.There are also Kokes in there.
When the holding tank is full , use to catch them on needle fish off the dam.And there are smallies in there as well ;)
Tightlines.

Didn't know about the kokes and smallies being in there...I didn't think it was deep enough for the kokes....Didnt it drain a few years ago? I believe one of the pipes on the big creek side broke and it washed out the big creek road as well.

As of about 5 years ago they were there.
You could see the schools of kokes swimming from
the top of the dam. They would chase jerked needle fish.
Then out from no where a smallie would chase it down and
grab it. Just make sure the water is high enough so you dont
have to haul them too far up the face of the dam ;)
The honest truth ;D
