Spent the weekend on a solo trip down in the canyon hunting for the Big Bad "Brown" Boys of the N/F's Uninhibited (4,800 ft) Zone. *After a bumpy drive to a dead end logging road and 800 foot hike straight down I wondered for a second if I would ever make it back out...the concern quickly faded upon hearing the music of rushing rapids and seeing the first of many "fishy" pools.

http://img360.imageshack.us/img360/6940/p1060926customlh1.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Tried fly fishing at the above pool and found mostly 5-6 inch trout hitting and spitting a variety of dry flies. *Finally landed a nice wild bow of about 10 inches that refused to pose for a photo. *After an eery night alone I headed downstream to determine if this place really held brown trout. *A deep pool like this must be where they are all hidding...

http://img48.imageshack.us/img48/5791/p1060950custombh7.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

No hits...even on the nightcrawlers I packed in. *When you get down this far you pack all the ammo you can. *Not even a taker for a tempting cricket. *By now the sun was cresting and bugs were flying...but no surface activity, so I switched to spinners.

http://img48.imageshack.us/img48/752/p1060960customlc8.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

No hits...was beginning to wonder what in the world I got myself into and glad that I didn't drag anybody else along. *With no luck in the pools, I began looking for the undercuts and slow moving currents.

http://img48.imageshack.us/img48/8406/p1060967customnj4.jpg (http://imageshack.us) *

Voila, the combo of undercuts and kastmasters proved the existance of another trout...a nice jumping RBT, C P & R.

http://img48.imageshack.us/img48/5973/p1060966custommb0.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

After handing over another kastmaster to the other side, I then tied on my heaviest gold kastmaster to help "master the cast". *Upon landing inches from the other bank, just under the tree limbs, I started a twitching retrieve and bam! Another one...this time there was no jumping as he quickly headed straight for my side of the bank tangling up my line in the bushes. Without hesitation I was in waist deep untangling line as the current kept just enough tension...finally the elusive brown had landed!

http://img48.imageshack.us/img48/3992/p1060972custommu2.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Nearly 15 inches but buffed and beautiful...after an excited snapshot he was back in the water as I quickly set up for a pic of just the two of us. Doesn't matter that I missed my face, do note the wet pants and shoes to vouch for the winning match. Then off he went to get a little fatter, and perhaps never be disturbed again. *:question * *

Now having my faith restored, I continued the morning and afternoon only to see the browns getting smaller while the rainbows varied from 6-10 inches, but the wild fights sure made it fun.

http://img48.imageshack.us/img48/8179/p1070012customlw0.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

I turned this fishing hole into a swimming hole to get refreshed for the big climb out. What was a 30 minute mosquito escorted descent, resulted into a 90 minute ascent of mosquitos vs sweaty deet, followed by a final look back & farewell...Peace!

Way to explore and persevere and find a way to find the fish. Beautiful brown! That must have been a thrill after doubting your methods or the presence of nice trout in the river. THANKS :)

Where were you at on the map?

It's probably about 5 miles upstream from Boards Crossing, down between Ramsey and Ganns. *

Very nice pics and report Floater. I dig it. Probably never make it up that way, so it's nice to get a sneak peak.

Good job with the Kastmaster too. I love those things.

It was my first time into that elevation of the Stani, I was surprised how much water was still flowing down at this time of year.

I Saw one small trace of snagged fishing line, other wise no trace of persons, not even one piece of trash...it was like how the mountains used to be 20 plus years ago. Was great to see that places like that still exists outside of a wilderness.

In this picture I am standing way up where the high run off water line is. *And there are now pools 6-8 feet deep. *I would love to see this place roaring during the spring run off.

Nice brown Float N Fish!!!! ;) Those pictures are awesome! I like adventures when you "lose" yourself in the wilderness and find places that no one else has probably seen. I wish I had the time to do that :'(

Actually this river section reminded me alot of taking an easy hiking trail up the Tuolumne (Scenic & Wild) from the Cherry Early Intake pump house where Cherry Rd crosses the river. *It's a zero limit fishery (and I limited out), but the water coming down in April was incredible...about 4 miles up from the parking lot is a neat water fall plunging into a large pool like the one I came across on the Stanislaus. *Some of the rapids then must have been class IV or V. *The trail follows the river up to Preston Falls...stay on the trail to avoid the poison oak. *It's one of the better early season hikes in the Stanislaus Forest. *

You know Mack, *I always consider Sourgrass and Boards the same place since it's the Boards Crossing turn off out of Dorrington. *I'd say I was about 5 miles upstream from Sourgrass, not Boards. *The map also shows a trail out of Ganns, last I looked the trailhead sign was still there next to the old HW 4 but the trail was long grown over and faded away.

If you park at Sourgrass bridge day use area there is a road/trail that goes up stream to what we called rattle snake falls back in the day and that is probably close to where you were at ?
