In spite of high water on most of the area rivers had another banner trip. When I first arrived the Beav, Big Hole, Ruby and parts of the Madison were fishable but the Madison and Ruby were only a couples days from blowing out completely. I headed to the Ruby first thing and managed to get in some fishing before she blew with 20 fish in three hours all 16 and 17”. At that point you could probably have 40 fish days on the Ruby but nothing big. By about the 17th the Madison and Ruby were down for the count and were still high when I left on the 1st. Fortunately the Beav remained in good shape the whole time and the Big Hole was high but still fishable. Some of the small creeks still had some post spawn fish to about 22”. Spent 6 days trolling the lake with Don as well for lots of Browns, Kamloop and Eagle Lake Bows from 17 to 23”.
I managed a total of 150 fish this trip with 79 fish 18” or larger, the biggest 5-23” Browns 1 in the lake and 4 in the stream and 1-25” Burbot and of coarse a big Brown that got away.

Here’s a picture of Don with Old One Eye. I’ve since verified through photos that we both caught this fish at least twice each and I think I caught it two other times but didn’t take picks at first. I also think there were two other fish in that hole I caught multiple times.

its nice to hear about some of the fishing in montana. I will be heading up to Hamilton on the 19th for two weeks. We plan on fishing Flathead for a couple of days and then hit a few of the small streams around the bitterroot. After reading your report about clark canyon i might try and hit it for a day.

I went to college in Missoula... I sure miss being in such close proximity to all that great water. Thanks for your report and congratulations on a great time.

If you fish the Beav below Clark, it’s been fishing really well but try to hit it mid week, the weekend crowds have been tough. Nymphs, spinners, CD Raps and bait have all been working well.
Good luck

Cool report Gary! I almost missed it with all this blue.

Old One Eye is quite the fish! Great pics and write up.

Well done, and appreciate the report from big sky country. The Ruby River is a giant spring creek, correct?
