View Full Version : Lake Almanor Browns/Bows 12-9 w/PICS - BRRR!!!

Headed up to Lake Almanor solo this morning to check out the fishing situation. *When I arrived at 7:05am, it was a balmy 18 degrees outside. *The surface water temperature was 44 degrees, so almost decided to take a swim and warm up! ;D *But I thought I should go fishing instead. *There was just a hint of a breeze, just enough to drop the temp down a few more degrees. *Saw a lot of fish surfacing, so went with the fly rod and a bugger pattern and also ran a plug with the other rod for part of the time.

Here's a view of Mt. Lassen (if you can see it in the background) from the southeast side of the lake...

First rainbow into the net, not huge by any means, but at least a fish!

Upon making a slight change of direction, I got my first brown on a AC skinny...

Then another rainbow came along...

While I was slowly trolling my fly through Geritol Cove, this FAT (full of eggs) female brown hits my fly and takes me on a nice 5 minute battle!

Notice the fat belly and eggs spooging out of her...

All fish were released unharmed after CPR (Catch-Photograph-Release) to fight/spawn another day.
Ended up boating 5 rainbows, 2 browns, and lost another 10 or so due to short strikes.

Saw some bankies catching fish also in Geritol Cove. *I think they said they were using flourescent PowerBait.

Captain, I didn't get a chance to take a photo of the male rainbow that milted all over the side of my drift boat. You should've seen the color on that one! :)

Forgot to mention that I also saw a brown jump that must've been at least 10 lbs or larger, almost looked like a giant chinook like you'd see in the river!

Browns and Bows spawning at the same time? Maybe there are Brownbows in Almanor. 8-)

How far of a drive is Almanor from the SOuth Bay area? ( not that it matters) Those are some pretty fish. Makes you kinda wwant to release everything you would catch there. Theyre too pretty to eat!
