"But Captain. I thought Red was iced over." Not so. Read on.

Believing that the weather report was correct and winds were going to be calm in the morning I arrived at ICR at sunrise to be greeted by a gentle morning breeze of 20 MPH from the Southwest. Fished by the dam with Powerbait and caught 1 fat 17 inch Bow. The eagles were flying and I saw my first Snow Geese of the year. Left early due to wind conditions. Went home and did a little work had some lunch and decided to go out again. The weather had been warm in the Carson Valley the last couple of days with strong SW winds. It occurred to me that maybe I could find some clear water at Red. Arrived Red around 12:30. There was ice at the dam but the South shore was clear. Fished 20 minutes with a gold Kastmaster nothing. Fished with Powerbait for half an hour with one nibble. Switched back to the Kastmaster foe a few more casts and immediately hooked a large Cutt. After a 10 minute fight I landed my biggest fish of the year a 25" 6 1/2 pound Cutt. Once again a hunch pays off. Took a brief trip to Caples. No wind, no fish.

ok, as a (so far) good standing rookie on this forum...........

(wait, i have to digress a second.......why do you guys call us rookies on a fish forum?? shouldnt it be fingerling, or fry, or minnow, etc.?? and then have us advance to lunker, or pig, or hawg......just curious.......end digression) *:)

i will stick my neck out.............what/where is ICR? *i know of caples and red.

and can you still boat at silver and caples?

thanks and nice report capt.

Now Capt. that just wasn't fair. You know that I have given up on any more trips to Red this year. :'(
The you go and show off that beautiful cutt. I should stick in another pic of my steelie from last weekend in here for retribution.
No really, beautiful fish as usual and pics to go along with it. It almost makes me envy you living on that side of the hill but then again I think I've got it pretty good down here too.

ICR (Indian Creek Res.) is located between Markleeville and Woodfords around 4 miles east of Highway 89 on Airport Road. Silver and Caples are still ice free. The boat ramp at Kay's Resort is still open but not in the water if you have 4WD and a small boat I believe you can launch to the side of the ramp. There is another boat ramp at Kit Carson lodge at Silver but I don't know the status of that. The boat ramp at Caples is closed.

I hadn't expected any more trips to Red either but it had been so warm here and the wind was blowing so hard I had a hunch that maybe some water had opened at Red. I was right. There was only Ice at the Dam, the entire south shore is ice free. Going back tomorrow to give it another try in the morning.

*As I recall Indian Creek Reservoir is the treated effluent from South Tahoe.

The trout at ICR are beautiful but I don't eat them. About a month ago the DFG were there collecting trout for toxin testing. They had a boat with electrodes and the trout would float to the surface. It was cool. 8-)

Gas motors are OK. There may be a speed limit. This time of year boats can only be launched from the shore. From May through October there is a boat ramp near the BLM campground. But it is closed this time of year. I've only seen aluminum boats on the lake.

No Rap. I snagged a big Cutt in the back a couple of weeks ago and lost him at the shore. I checked his back and it wasn't him.

CC,

Beautiful fish and pictures. Do you fish ICR from the bank or do you ever get out in a boat (I kayak)? This last summer, my fishing buddy in Arnold had major surgery and couldn’t go fishing, but next year, after the Ebbetts Pass is open, I think we’ll take that beautiful drive and fish ICR

Beautiful fish CC. I figured you were about due for a big one but thought for sure it would come from ICR. That’s about the biggest one I’ve seen from Red.
Considering all the work you’ve been putting in you really deserve this one.

Grizz,
If you fish ICR next summer the earlier in the season the better generally. April can be a good month. Once the water warms up it gets pretty slow in the summer. Great lake for Yaks and Tubes.

Cap'n, I knew yesterday that Red would be ice free when my truck told me it was 67. Too bad I have to work and the coming storm will probably wipe the weekend out. :-[

I think the East Walker might be good though. I know a sweet hole that always produces on nymphs and a couple of runs where they will take a dry.

Boy Capt. you just can't catch a break can you?

The way I see it you had two choices...
You could've of taken it home and eaten it, then the fish is dead for sure.
You could release the fish and then at least it has a chance to live, because we all know that even with proper technique not all C&R'd fish live.
So what you need to do is train the fish to swim close to shore, in shallow water, so you can photograph them and not endanger their lives. *Come on folks, if we didn't want to endanger these fish we first of all wouldn't eat them and second we wouldn't be trying to trick them into eating our hooks.
By the way, great job and thanks for sharing your experience.

Thanks JMat. Truth be told that was the largest trout I've caught in over 20 years and I wasn't going to let the opportunity to get a good picture go by. Had I not been alone perhaps better C&R technique could have been practiced but as you say the only true way to guarentee fish survival is to not fish for them.

SOUNDS pretty cool *are you going to ice fish?

I just might. Last year I waited just a little too long. The ice was thick enough but all the snow covering the ice had melted. I arrived on a clear and not too cold March Monday morning and picked out a nice new hole that someone had drilled the previous weekend around 100 feet from shore and started out on the ice. I never made it. Within the first 50 feet I had slipped 3 times so I beat a hasty retreat back to the shore sliding on my backside. :-[ If I go this year better planning is in order.

Sorry for opening that can of worms Capt. Next time I will keep my mouth shut :-X
I am all for C&R and there is a good tread on the Fishing Issues Board about someone getting mad about releasing fish and then some guy sit down next to him and started stringing up 10 inchers. Read it if you want. http://www.fishsniffer.com/cgi-bin/forumsyabb/YaBB.pl?num=1195860885
As fisherman and women we do have some responsibility to protect our fisheries and should report any violation observed while fishing. Point being of the read is, it might be better to mind your own business while fishing unless you see a voilation of the regulation. Then call DGF. Capt. did nothing to voilate any regulation. These fish are not oversized strugen that can not be pulled out of the water. It might make some of us mad to see a fish flopping around on the ground, but everyone has a different way of doing things. We should all respect that! I am just glad Capt. give me a shot at that beauty ;) although I hate sloppy seconds ;) ;D but wont complain 8-)

I'm not a big fan of the fighting ability of Cutts however this guy was a handful. There was a 4 foot shelf of shore ice and when I first got him to shore he hid under it for a while then ran again and stripped off around 50 feet of line. I had to follow him up the shore aways. As usual I always seem to catch my biggest fish when I'm all alone. The entire lake was empty except for me, some Canvas Back Ducks and a Bald Eagle.
