Danny Layne of Fishn' Dan's Guide Service reported recent plants of rainbows have improved the bite with blade/nightcrawler or ExCel lures in the top 20 feet near the Spillway and into the Angels Creek arm. The larger fish are found in the upper reaches of the lake from Parrott's Ferry to the south fork of the Stanislaus with shad-imitation lures or rolled shad. The bite at nearby Lake Tulloch remains strong with Uncle Larry's Spinners or Vance's Slim Willies tipped with a 'crawler, longlined Power Bait or rolled shad at depths from the surface to 20 feet from the river channel at the South Shore to the mouth of Black Creek or in the Green Springs Arm near the Power Lines. Layne has landed fish to 5 pounds this week. Both Melones and Tulloch are scheduled for trout plants this week. Melanie Lewis of Glory Hole Sports in Angels Camp reported difficult bass fishing with larger fish found on Huddleston shad-imitation swimbaits. A few large catfish continue to bite anchovies, mackerel, sardines or nightcrawlers near muddy, sloping banks. The lake came up 1087 acre-feet from upstream reservoirs to 59% capacity.
